Chapter 10 - MARCUS HAD THE MONEY TO REPAY DANIELA THE WHOLE TIME

Marcus stared at the account statement.
Then said:
“That isn’t liquid cash.”
Lucia almost laughed.
The account held restricted shares from his former employer.
Some vested.
Some not.
Current accessible value:
Approximately $260,000.
Enough to restore Daniela’s missing money.
“Why didn’t you use it?”
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Taxes.”
Lucia waited.
“And?”
“I didn’t want to lose my investment cushion.”
There it was.
He protected his cushion.
Used his daughter’s.
“So Daniela’s future was more spendable than yours?”
“No.”
“That’s what you did.”
He cried.
Again.
Lucia was exhausted by tears arriving after consequences.
Then Marcus did something different.
He signed instructions, with counsel present, to liquidate enough vested assets to restore the $180,000 plus the lost investment growth attributable to the withdrawals.
Not because Lucia forgave him.
Because it was Daniela’s money.
Then he agreed to give up administrative control over her trust.
An independent fiduciary would manage it.
Good.
No parent should have been able to repeat the mistake easily.
Then Marcus turned to the West Loop project.
He wanted to sell.
Teresa fought him.
She claimed they would lose too much.
Marcus replied:
“We already lost too much.”
The building was listed.
Offers came in below debt.
Not catastrophic.
Painful.
Real.
Then Valeria was discharged after two weeks with strict follow-up.
The pregnancy continued.
Fragile but stable.
She moved in with her sister.
Marcus offered to pay expenses directly.
Valeria refused private arrangements.
Everything would go through attorneys and documented support.
She had learned too.
Then Lucia received an unexpected letter.
From Valeria.
I know you do not owe me anything.
I also know I was living inside a lie Marcus built.
But there is one thing you deserve to know.
Three weeks before the crash, Marcus told me he planned to confess everything after the development refinancing.
Lucia almost laughed.
After.
Always after.
After the loan.
After the sale.
After the anniversary.
After the baby.
Truth was always scheduled after convenience.
Then Valeria wrote:
That night, we were driving to meet Teresa.
Lucia stopped.
Why?
Because Teresa had demanded Valeria sign something before the refinancing.
A confidentiality and release agreement.
In exchange:
$300,000.
Valeria refused.
The argument began in the car.
Marcus was distracted.
Then the crash happened.
May you like
The collision had not been caused by romance.
It had happened while Marcus and Valeria were arguing about Teresa’s attempt to buy the mistress’s silence.
