Chapter 1 - I OPERATED ON THE WOMAN CARRYING MY HUSBAND’S CHILD

The first thing Lucia did after reading Marcus’s name on Valeria’s crash report was remove herself completely from his case.
Not because she wanted him to suffer.
Because she was still a physician before she was a betrayed wife.
“Dr. Javier has full authority over Marcus Salgado,” she told the trauma coordinator. “No one brings me updates unless his condition materially changes.”
Then she turned toward OR 1.
Valeria’s blood pressure was collapsing.
The OB team was already moving beside her, monitoring the twenty-two-week pregnancy while anesthesia prepared for emergency surgery.
Lucia scrubbed in.
For the next ninety minutes, she did not think about Marcus.
She did not think about Valeria’s name appearing on his phone three weeks earlier.
She did not think about the messages she had already photographed.
She did not think about the legal documents sitting inside a locked drawer in her office.
She thought only about anatomy.
Bleeding.
Pressure.
Time.
Valeria had suffered a splenic injury and internal bleeding from the collision. Lucia coordinated with trauma surgery while OB monitored fetal heart activity.
At 2:41 a.m., the bleeding was controlled.
At 3:06, Valeria was transferred to intensive care.
The pregnancy remained fragile but viable for the moment.
Only then did Lucia remove her gloves.
A nurse quietly approached.
“Your husband is out of surgery.”
Lucia nodded once.
“Stable?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
No relief crossed her face.
But something inside her chest loosened.
She still wanted Marcus alive.
That surprised her.
Then the nurse hesitated.
“Dr. Herrera… Valeria became conscious briefly before transfer.”
Lucia looked up.
“What did she say?”
“She asked whether Marcus survived.”
Lucia’s jaw tightened.
Then:
“She also asked for you.”
Lucia froze.
“Me?”
The nurse nodded.
“She said, ‘Tell Lucia I’m sorry. I didn’t know what he told her.’”
Lucia stood very still.
“What did Marcus tell her?”
The nurse shook her head.
Valeria had lost consciousness again before explaining.
Then Lucia’s phone vibrated.
Her attorney.
One message:
THE DOCUMENTS WERE FILED AT 12:01 A.M.
Lucia stared at the timestamp.
Three weeks earlier, she had prepared them.
At midnight, exactly one day before the anniversary provision in their marital agreement changed, the filing became effective.
Marcus had no idea.
And when he woke up, he would discover that Lucia had already revoked his authority over her separate estate, removed him as successor manager of her medical real-estate holdings, and filed a petition for legal separation.
But that was not the biggest surprise.

The largest document concerned their twelve-year-old daughter, Daniela.
And Marcus had never known Lucia discovered what he had secretly done with Daniela’s trust account.
