Chapter 4 - The Key in My Daughter's Box

The brass key was small enough to fit inside Sophie's palm, but Dante treated it as if it could bring down an entire government.

He ordered the room cleared, checked the windows, and placed the key inside a sealed evidence pouch. Then he called a man named Victor Hale, a former federal investigator who had worked with Dante's legal team before retiring.

When Victor arrived, he examined the key beneath a magnifying lamp.

“This isn't for a conventional lock,” he said. “It's a mechanical cipher key. The teeth correspond to a specific sequence.”

“What does it open?” I asked.

Victor glanced at Teresa.

She looked away.

Dante's voice hardened. “Mother.”

Teresa finally admitted that Antonio had maintained a private archive beneath the estate. It contained financial records, recordings, and evidence of agreements made with judges, police officers, and business executives.

Miguel had discovered the archive while investigating suspicious shipments.

Before he disappeared, he had apparently hidden its key with Sophie.

“Why would he give something like this to a baby?” I asked.

“Because he trusted you to protect it without knowing what it was,” Teresa replied.

I remembered the wooden box Miguel had brought home shortly before his supposed death. He'd told me it was a gift for Sophie and asked me never to throw it away.

I had kept it through two apartments, one funeral, and three years of loneliness.

Now I understood why.

Dante studied the key.

“If Antonio gets that archive first, he can destroy anyone who threatens him.”

“And if we get it?” I asked.

“We can expose him.”

Teresa shook her head.

“Not everything inside that archive should be made public.”

I stared at her.

“Are you protecting him?”

“I'm trying to prevent a war.”

Dante stepped between us.

“No more secrets.”

Teresa's face crumpled.

“You think you can destroy your father with a folder of evidence? He has men inside the police department, the courthouse, and this very estate. If you expose him without knowing who is loyal, people will die.”

Before anyone could answer, Victor's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds, then looked directly at me.

“Someone just accessed your old apartment in Brooklyn.”

“Who?”

“The property was supposed to be vacant. But the security footage shows a woman entering with a child.”

My heart stopped.

“What child?”

Victor turned the screen toward me.

The woman wore my old winter coat.

The child held a star-shaped pillow identical to Sophie's.

I looked upstairs instinctively.

Sophie was still beside Bruno.

Then who was the little girl in the footage?

Victor enlarged the image.

The child turned toward the camera.

She had Sophie's face.
