Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Hired Me

Teresa Moretti arrived at the mansion at 6:15 a.m., wearing a cream-colored suit and the same pearl earrings she'd worn to Miguel's funeral.

I watched her descend the grand staircase while Dante stood beside me, silent and rigid.

She looked at my face, then at the photograph on the study desk.

For the first time since I'd known her, Teresa appeared genuinely frightened.

“Where did you get that?”

“Tell me why you hired me,” I demanded.

She set down her handbag.

“Because you needed help.”

“Don't insult me. You knew Miguel was alive.”

Teresa glanced at Dante.

That single movement told me more than any confession could have.

“I knew he might have survived,” she admitted.

I felt something inside me crack.

“Might have?”

“The night he was attacked, I received a call from a doctor at a private clinic. He said Miguel had suffered a severe head injury and needed protection. By the time I arrived, he was gone.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because the men who attacked him were searching for you and Sophie.”

I shook my head.

“You gave me a cottage on a mafia estate and called it protection?”

“I gave you the only place they wouldn't dare enter without my permission.”

Dante's expression darkened.

“Mother, who were you protecting her from?”

Teresa looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said, “Your father.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Dante's father, Antonio Moretti, had supposedly died of a heart attack eleven years earlier. His portrait hung above the mansion's main staircase, a stern man with silver hair and a gold watch.

A silver watch.

My hands went numb.

Teresa noticed.

“Yes,” she whispered. “The watch in Sophie's description belonged to Antonio.”

“But he's dead,” Dante said.

Teresa closed her eyes.

“That's what I told the family.”

She explained that Antonio had staged his death after a federal investigation threatened to expose the Moretti family's criminal operations. He had continued directing a hidden network through coded messages, secret passages, and loyal men who believed the old boss remained untouchable.

Miguel had discovered the network.

He had also discovered that someone was using the hidden tunnel to enter the cottage.

“Why would Antonio come near Sophie?” I asked.

Teresa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because your daughter inherited something he wants.”

Before I could demand an explanation, Bruno began barking upstairs.

A crash followed.

Dante ran toward the staircase, drawing his weapon.

I followed him into the private suite.

Sophie was safe, curled beneath a blanket with Bruno beside her.

But the little wooden box she'd kept since infancy was open on the floor.

Inside, beneath her baby bracelet, lay a tiny brass key I had never seen before.

May you like

Teresa stared at it.

Then she whispered, “Oh, God. Miguel gave her the original.”
