Chapter 12 - The Truth That Almost Destroyed Us

I pulled my hand away from Miguel.

Dante stood across the room, his face drained of color. He didn't reach for me. He didn't defend himself.

That frightened me more than a denial would have.

“Tell me it's a lie,” I whispered.

Dante looked directly at me.

“I ordered a shipment stopped. I was told the warehouse was empty.”

“And my husband?”

“I didn't know Miguel was there.”

Miguel struggled to sit up.

“He's telling the truth about that part.”

I stared at him.

“That part?”

Miguel explained that three years earlier, he had discovered Antonio's men were moving weapons through a Moretti warehouse. He had arranged to copy the shipping records and expose the operation. Dante had authorized a security sweep after receiving false intelligence that the warehouse contained stolen weapons.

Antonio altered the instructions.

Instead of a controlled search, his men launched an armed attack.

Miguel was caught in the crossfire.

When he survived, Antonio arranged for his death to be faked and placed him under guard. He intended to use Miguel's knowledge to control Dante and eliminate anyone who could expose the network.

“Why didn't you come home?” I demanded.

Miguel's eyes filled with tears.

“Antonio threatened to kill you and Sophie. He showed me photographs of you leaving work, of Sophie sleeping, of you walking to the grocery store. He said if I returned, he'd make sure the next attack succeeded.”

“So you let us mourn you.”

“I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.”

I turned away.

Every person who claimed to protect me had decided that I couldn't handle the truth. They had built walls around my life and called them safety.

Dante approached slowly.

“I should have investigated the attack myself. I trusted the wrong people, and I let your family suffer for it.”

“Why should I trust you now?”

“You shouldn't have to,” he said. “Not because of my name. Not because of what I own. Only if I prove I deserve it.”

Before I could answer, Victor rushed into the room carrying a tablet.

“Boss, we've got a problem.”

The prosecutor's office had issued an emergency order to seize the Moretti estate. Someone had also accessed the hospital's secure records and changed Miguel's identity back to that of a deceased man.

The system now listed him as a fugitive who had stolen confidential evidence.

Worse, the two girls had been flagged for immediate protective custody.

Victor showed us a live news broadcast.

Richard Voss stood outside a courthouse, accusing Dante of fabricating the recording and kidnapping two children.

The public would see a crime boss, a missing accountant, and a woman who had spent years working inside a criminal household.

They would not see the truth.

Then my phone rang.

A social worker's number appeared on the screen.

“Mrs. Gallagher,” a woman said, “we're at the Moretti estate. We have an order to remove Sophie and Lily.”

I heard Sophie crying in the background.

“Mama, they say we have to go!”

The call disconnected.

Dante grabbed his coat.

I stopped him.

“No more running into danger without a plan.”

I looked at Victor.

“Find me the judge who signed that order.”

May you like

Victor hesitated.

Then he whispered, “Clara, the judge is already dead.”
