Chapter 13 - The Mother Who Refused to Run

The judge's death had been reported twelve hours before he supposedly signed the emergency order.
That meant someone had forged his authorization and used it to separate the girls from their family.
I refused to let it happen.
Victor contacted a legitimate family-law attorney who had previously represented witnesses in organized-crime cases. Meanwhile, Dante arranged for the girls to remain at the estate under the supervision of an independent child advocate until the order could be challenged.
No threats.
No bribery.
No armed men intimidating social workers.
For once, we would fight with evidence.
The attorney, Margaret Shaw, arrived before dawn. She reviewed the forged order, the recording from the lighthouse, and the records connecting Voss to Antonio's hidden clinic.
Then she made one call to a federal judge outside the compromised district.
Within an hour, the removal order was suspended.
Sophie and Lily were safe.
When I reached the mansion, Sophie ran into my arms so hard we nearly fell over.
Bruno circled us, whining and nudging her hands with his enormous head. Lily stood nearby, uncertain whether she was allowed to join us.
I opened my arms.
She ran forward.
For the first time, both girls held me at once.
I promised them that nobody would separate us without a fight.
Later that morning, Elena and Miguel were transferred to a secure medical facility under federal protection. Teresa agreed to testify about the hidden clinic, while Victor delivered the evidence to investigators who had no connection to Voss.
Dante remained at the mansion, answering questions and preparing to surrender every document connected to his business operations.
When I found him in the study, he was removing the last of the weapons from his desk.
“You don't have to do this alone,” I said.
He looked up.
“I spent years believing that control was the same as protection. I'm trying to learn the difference.”
I sat across from him.
“I can't promise I'll forgive everything.”
“I know.”
“And I won't let Sophie grow up believing fear is normal.”
“Neither will I.”
For a moment, the silence between us felt honest.
Then Margaret entered with a sealed envelope.
The original recording had been reviewed by federal investigators. It contained enough evidence to expose Voss, Antonio, and several members of the Black Circle.
But the final audio segment had been encrypted.
Margaret placed the envelope on the desk.
“Your husband left instructions that this should only be opened if the girls were safe.”
Inside was a memory card and a handwritten note.
The truth about Lily's birth is on this recording. Clara deserves to know before she decides what happens next.
I inserted the card into the tablet.
Miguel's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, it means I failed to keep one promise.”
He paused.
Then he said something that made Sophie, standing in the doorway, whisper a question I couldn't answer.
“Lily is not Elena's biological daughter.”
The recording continued.

“Lily is Antonio Moretti's granddaughter.”
And her mother was the woman who had ordered Miguel's disappearance.
