Chapter 10 - What Bruno Brought Home

Bruno hit the top landing like a black avalanche.
The guards scattered.
Antonio stumbled backward, shouting for someone to shoot the dog, but Bruno ignored every command except the one that mattered.
He dropped the wooden box at my feet.
I recognized it immediately.
Sophie's keepsake box.
The one she had kept beside her bed since infancy.
I opened it with shaking hands.
Inside lay a tiny brass key, a folded note, and a photograph of Miguel holding both girls as newborns.
Not one child.
Two.
My heart stopped.
The note was written in Miguel's handwriting.
Clara, if you are reading this, the girls are together. Trust Elena. Trust Dante only when he chooses the truth over his family.
I looked at Dante.
He was still on his knees, blood running from his shoulder, but his eyes never left mine.
Antonio lunged toward the box.
Bruno blocked him, baring his teeth.
“Get that animal away from me!” Antonio shouted.
“No,” Dante said.
His voice was quiet, but the entire room seemed to freeze.
“You don't give orders here anymore.”
Antonio turned toward his son in disbelief.
Dante rose slowly, despite his injury.
For the first time, the men surrounding him hesitated.
They had obeyed Antonio because they feared his reputation. They obeyed Dante because they had seen what happened when someone threatened the people he protected.
And now they had to decide which man they were willing to follow.
One guard lowered his weapon.
Then another.
Antonio's face twisted with rage.
“You think a woman and two children make you weak?”
Dante stepped between him and me.
“No. They made me understand what strength was supposed to mean.”
Antonio fired.
Dante staggered as the bullet grazed his side. Before Antonio could shoot again, Elena struck his wrist with a metal flashlight. The gun skidded across the floor.
I grabbed the brass key and ran toward the stairs.
“Clara!” Dante shouted.
But I had seen the message inside the box.
The key wasn't meant to open a vault.
It was meant to activate a hidden recording device built into the lighthouse's original lantern mechanism.
I climbed the final steps and inserted the key into a narrow slot behind the control panel.
A mechanical click sounded.
Then Antonio's voice filled the room through the old speakers.
“Once the shipment clears the port, eliminate Gallagher and the woman. Keep the children alive. The girls are worth more to me than the ledger.”
The recording continued.
A second voice answered.
Teresa's.
“What if Dominic discovers what you've done?”
Antonio laughed.
“He won't. Because when the time comes, I'll make him believe his own wife betrayed him.”
Teresa collapsed into a chair.
Dante stared at his father.
The recording had exposed Antonio's plan.
But it also revealed something nobody had expected.

The last voice belonged to a federal prosecutor.
And he was the man scheduled to lead the investigation into the Moretti family the following morning.
