Chapter 3 - The Stolen Legacy

Lady Beatrice wiped her tears, motioning Julian to retrieve an antique mahogany strongbox from the private wall safe.

The heavy wooden chest was bound in tarnished brass and bore the engraved silver crest of the Thorne family.

Beatrice unlocked the box with a small golden key hanging around her neck, pulling out a stack of yellowed letters from thirty years ago.

“The night your mother vanished, Clara, our family received a ransom note accompanied by a forged suicide letter,” Beatrice revealed, her voice shaking with grief.

“The letter claimed Genevieve had embezzled thirty million dollars from the family shipping trust and fled the country in shame.”

“I spent three decades believing my eldest daughter hated me, believing she chose to die in the cold rather than face her family.”

I shook my head firmly, pulling a small, worn velvet pouch from my apron pocket.

Inside the pouch was my mother’s handwritten diary, preserved inside a waterproof sleeve, along with her original birth certificate and naval marriage license.

I handed the diary to Lady Beatrice, opening the final entry dated the night she fled Chicago in 1996.

”Dearest Mother,” Genevieve’s elegant, cursive script read across the aged parchment.

”Richard Sterling and his syndicate have cornered our maritime supply lines; they threatened to murder my unborn child if I did not sign over my fifty percent trust equity.”

”They staged a vehicular crash near the pier and gave me two hours to leave Illinois under an assumed name.”

”I am running to protect my baby girl, Clara; if you ever hear this melody again, know that my heart never left Lake Forest.”

Julian gripped the edge of the mahogany table until the polished wood groaned beneath the pressure of his fingers.

His eyes darkened into an abyss of homicidal fury as the thirty-year-old corporate conspiracy was laid bare before him.

“Richard Sterling…” Julian whispered, the name dripping from his lips like pure poison.

Richard Sterling was Victoria’s father—the senior partner who had merged his logistics firm with the Thorne empire thirty years ago.

Richard had orchestrated Genevieve’s forced exile to eliminate the primary heir, paving the way for his own daughter to marry Julian and conquer the Thorne fortune.

Victoria stood up from the sofa, trembling violently, her eyes darting toward the penthouse elevator.

“My father would never do such a thing!” Victoria screamed, backing away from the family.

“This diary is a forged piece of garbage created by a bitter runaway!”

Julian turned toward his fiancée, stepping into her path with the cold, majestic dominance of an executioner.

“Your father bought his first shipping terminal thirty years ago with thirty million dollars of untraceable bonds, Victoria,” Julian said in a low, deadly growl.

“The exact same thirty million dollars that disappeared from my aunt’s trust the night she vanished.”

“Your entire life of luxury was built on the stolen blood of the woman standing right in front of you.”
