Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Verification

Within ten minutes of the ballroom confrontation, the Thorne family private security detail had sealed every exit of the grand hotel.

Julian escorted Lady Beatrice, Lily, and me into the opulent presidential penthouse on the eighty-fourth floor.

The private suite was fortified with biometric locks, soundproof walls, and armed guards stationed at every threshold.

Dr. Alistair Sterling, the renowned chief of genetics at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, arrived via private helicopter within twenty minutes.

He carried a portable, high-speed automated genetic sequencer and four sterile mucosal swab kits.

Victoria Sterling sat on the leather sofa in the corner, her arms crossed tightly, tapping her designer heels with aggressive, venomous energy.

“This is an absolute farce, Dr. Sterling!” Victoria sneered, glaring at my worn navy uniform.

“You are humoring a common banquet waitress who probably forged her identity papers to extort a settlement from the estate!”

Dr. Sterling did not even look at Victoria; he gently swabbed the inside of Lily’s cheek, then mine, and finally Lady Beatrice’s.

“The portable sequencer utilizes rapid tandem repeat amplification,” Dr. Sterling explained, inserting the samples into the humming machine.

“We will have an unequivocal biological kinship profile in less than twelve minutes.”

The penthouse fell into a suffocating, heavy silence broken only by the rhythmic tick of the antique mantel clock.

Lady Beatrice sat on the velvet settee, holding little Lily on her lap, gently stroking the little girl’s chestnut curls.

Lily looked up at the glittering crystal chandelier above, her small fingers touching Beatrice’s pearl necklace with innocent wonder.

“Are you my real great-grandma?” Lily asked softly, her hazel eyes sparkling in the warm light.

Beatrice burst into fresh tears, kissing Lily’s forehead with overwhelming tenderness.

“I am, my sweet angel,” Beatrice whispered.

“And you will never have to wear faded dresses or hide in the shadows ever again.”

The genetic sequencer emitted three sharp, high-pitched chimes, and the large digital monitor mounted on the wall flashed bright green.

Dr. Sterling stared at the screen, his hands visibly shaking as he read the statistical analysis.

“The results are definitive and mathematically incontrovertible,” Dr. Sterling announced, his voice filled with reverent awe.

“Clara is the biological daughter of Genevieve Thorne with a ninety-nine point nine-nine percent direct maternal lineage match.”

“And little Lily carries forty-eight percent shared autosomal DNA with Lady Beatrice Thorne.”

“She is the undisputed direct firstborn heir to the Thorne family dynasty.”

Victoria let out an ear-piercing gasp, her face draining of every drop of color until she looked like a plaster mannequin.

Julian stood up slowly from his armchair, his imposing presence towering over the room with absolute, terrifying authority.

He walked over to where I stood, reaching down to take my calloused hands into his warm, steady grip.

“Welcome home, cousin,” Julian said softly, his voice thick with unyielding loyalty.

“From this second onward, your suffering is over, and the people who stole your mother’s life will pay in full.”
