Chapter 4 - THE MARRIAGE THAT BECAME A FAMILY SECRET

Evelyn Gallagher had married Vincent Moretti believing she was a stranger entering a powerful man's world.

Now she was staring at a birth certificate suggesting she might be his niece.

The silence between them became unbearable.

Vincent looked as shocked as she felt.

"We need to verify this," he said.

Evelyn swallowed.

"Before anything else happens."

He nodded immediately.

"Yes."

They returned to the mansion separately from the storage facility and contacted independent attorneys.

Vincent arranged for Evelyn to have her own legal counsel.

He also made something clear.

"No matter what we discover, you will have a safe place to stay and complete freedom to make your own choices."

Evelyn looked at him.

"What about the marriage?"

Vincent lowered his head.

"We made that decision too quickly."

She laughed weakly.

"You think?"

He smiled sadly.

"Yes."

Then he grew serious.

"If the records show we're related, we'll pursue the appropriate legal steps to end the marriage."

Evelyn nodded.

For the first time since entering the mansion, she felt someone was treating her like an equal.

Not a servant.

Not a charity case.

A person whose choices mattered.

The following days were strange.

The girls continued clinging to Evelyn.

Vincent's daughters, Lily and Grace, were six-year-old twins.

They hadn't spoken since their mother died fourteen months earlier.

But they followed Evelyn everywhere.

They sat beside her during meals.

Held her hands in the garden.

And slept more peacefully when she read them bedtime stories.

One evening, Evelyn sat on the nursery floor, reading a picture book.

Lily pointed toward a drawing of a little rabbit.

Evelyn smiled.

"Do you like rabbits?"

The child nodded.

Grace reached for Evelyn's sleeve.

Then whispered a single word.

"Stay."

Evelyn froze.

She looked at the little girl.

"Sweetheart?"

Grace stared at her.

Then whispered again:

"Stay."

Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.

She hugged both girls.

"I'm right here."

Outside the nursery, Vincent stood motionless.

He had spent fourteen months waiting to hear his daughters speak.

Therapists had encouraged patience.

Specialists had explained that grief could affect children in many ways.

But now Grace had spoken.

Because Evelyn made her feel safe.

Vincent covered his mouth.

For the first time in more than a year, hope entered his heart.

Yet the family mystery remained.

Independent investigators examined the old birth certificate.

The handwriting.

The medical records.

And the photograph.

Several discrepancies emerged.

The document identifying Isabella as Evelyn's mother had been altered.

A laboratory comparison and archival review eventually established that the handwritten note was not part of the original birth record.

Vincent stared at the findings.

"Someone forged it."

Evelyn looked up.

"Why?"

The investigator continued.

"The original records list Catherine Gallagher as your biological mother."

Evelyn exhaled.

Relief flooded her.

But another question remained.

Why would someone make her believe she was Vincent's niece?

The investigator handed them another file.

It contained financial transfers made years earlier.

Payments from an organization controlled by Vincent's father.

The beneficiary was Catherine Gallagher.

Evelyn stared.

"My mother received money from your family?"

Vincent nodded slowly.

"Apparently."

The investigator continued.

"And those payments stopped shortly before Catherine died."

Evelyn's face drained of color.

Then he showed them a final document.

A photograph of Catherine standing beside an older man.

Vincent recognized him immediately.

His father's former attorney.

Leonard Bianchi.

A man who had disappeared after Isabella went missing.

The investigator looked toward Vincent.

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

"We found evidence that Catherine Gallagher wasn't protecting a child born to Isabella."

Vincent frowned.

"Then what was she protecting?"

May you like

The investigator swallowed.

"A witness. Someone who saw what happened to Isabella Moretti the night she disappeared."
