Chapter 12 - THE MESSAGE SOPHIA LEFT FOR EVELYN

Evelyn stared at the final page.
Sophia Moretti had died fourteen months earlier.
Evelyn had never met her.
Yet Catherine's letter suggested Sophia left a message specifically for the woman who would someday protect Lily and Grace.
It seemed impossible.
"How could she know?" Evelyn whispered.
Vincent looked equally confused.
Isabella leaned closer.
"Let me see."
Evelyn handed her the letter.
Isabella read it carefully.
Then her expression changed.
"I think I understand."
Vincent looked up.
"What?"
"Before Sophia died, she was trying to locate Catherine's daughter."
Evelyn froze.
"Me?"
Isabella nodded.
"She knew Catherine had passed away. She wanted to make sure you were safe."
Evelyn's eyes filled.
"Why?"
"Because Catherine had saved her life and mine."
Vincent looked down.
For years, Sophia had carried secrets.
Not because she wanted power.
Because she was trying to protect people.
Isabella continued.
"Sophia left a message in the archive."
The investigators retrieved the recording.
It was a short video.
Sophia sat at a kitchen table.
Her dark hair fell loosely around her shoulders.
She looked tired.
But her eyes were gentle.
"To Evelyn Gallagher," she began.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Sophia continued.
"You don't know me."
"But I knew your mother."
"Catherine was one of the bravest women I ever met."
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
"She helped people when helping them was dangerous."
Sophia smiled sadly.
"And I know she raised you to do the same."
Evelyn began crying.
The video continued.
"If you're watching this, then something may have happened to me."
Vincent closed his eyes.
Sophia looked directly into the camera.
"I have two daughters."
"Lily and Grace."
"They are my whole world."
Her voice trembled.
"If my family ever needs someone who understands kindness better than power, I hope they'll find you."
Evelyn couldn't breathe.
Sophia continued.
"I don't know whether our paths will cross."
"But if they do, please know that your mother would be proud of the woman you've become."
The recording ended.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Vincent looked toward Evelyn.
His eyes were filled with tears.
"She knew."
Evelyn shook her head.
"She hoped."
He nodded.
"Yes."
For the first time, the meaning of that terrible day outside the hotel became clear.
Evelyn hadn't been chosen because she was wealthy.
Or beautiful according to anyone else's standards.
Or connected to the Moretti name.
She'd simply heard children screaming.
And run toward them.
Exactly the kind of person Catherine and Sophia had hoped she would become.
That evening, Vincent invited Evelyn to dinner.
Not a formal banquet.
Not a performance for wealthy guests.
Just dinner in the family kitchen.
Lily and Grace sat beside her.
They helped decorate cupcakes.
Vincent attempted to cook pasta.
He failed spectacularly.
Evelyn laughed until tears filled her eyes.
For the first time since entering the mansion, she felt relaxed.
Safe.
Wanted.
But after the girls went upstairs, Vincent became serious.
"Evelyn, there's something I need to ask."
She looked at him.
"What?"
"Our legal situation."
Her stomach tightened.
He continued.
"The records have confirmed we're not biologically related."
She nodded.
"And the marriage remains legally valid."
Evelyn looked down.
Vincent gently took her hand.
"But I don't want you to stay because you feel obligated."
She looked up.
He continued.
"I want you to have complete freedom."
Her eyes filled.
"What are you saying?"
Vincent smiled sadly.
"If you want to leave, I'll help you build a life wherever you choose."
Silence.
May you like
Then he added something that made her heart stop.
"But if you want to stay, I'd like to learn how to become a husband you would choose even if I had no money, no mansion, and no power."
