Chapter 3 - THE GIRL WHO DISAPPEARED FROM THE MORETTI FAMILY

Vincent Moretti had been twenty-two when his younger sister disappeared.
Isabella was sixteen.
Bright.
Stubborn.
Always sneaking stray animals into the family garden.
She loved music.
Hated expensive dresses.
And believed everyone deserved kindness.
Then one summer evening, she vanished.
The police investigated.
His father hired private detectives.
His mother stopped sleeping.
But Isabella was never found.
Now, twenty-six years later, Evelyn Gallagher was holding a letter that mentioned her name.
"How did your mother know my sister?" Vincent asked.
Evelyn shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Did she ever mention the Moretti family?"
"No."
She thought for a moment.
"She used to say powerful families could hide terrible things behind beautiful gates."
Vincent looked away.
His father had been a ruthless man.
A criminal leader who valued reputation above everything.
Vincent had inherited much of that world.
And for years, he'd convinced himself that strength meant never showing weakness.
But Isabella had always disagreed.
"You're not protecting people," she'd once told him.
"You're just making them afraid to tell you the truth."
He remembered laughing.
Now those words haunted him.
Evelyn continued examining the box.
Beneath the necklace was a photograph.
Two young women stood beside a lake.
One was Evelyn's mother, Catherine Gallagher.
The other looked strikingly familiar.
Vincent took the photograph.
His hands began trembling.
"Isabella."
Evelyn stared.
"That's your sister?"
He nodded.
The girls were smiling.
Arms wrapped around each other.
Behind them stood a small wooden cabin.
Vincent recognized the location.
A family property near Lake Geneva.
A place his father had sold shortly after Isabella disappeared.
His chest tightened.
"What was your mother doing there?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"I have no idea."
Vincent turned the photograph over.
A date was written on the back.
August 14, 2000.
Three days before Isabella vanished.
Beneath the date were five words.
We finally know the truth.
Vincent stared.
"What truth?"
Evelyn looked frightened.
He softened his voice.
"I'm not accusing you."
She nodded.
"I know."
Then she said:
"My mother was only twenty when that photograph was taken."
Vincent frowned.
"How old was she when you were born?"
"Twenty-one."
Something changed in his expression.
Evelyn continued.
"My father died before I was born. That's what Mom always told me."
Vincent studied her face.
Her dark eyes.
Her soft brown curls.
The shape of her mouth.
A strange memory surfaced.
Isabella laughing beneath the summer sun.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
He looked at Evelyn again.
"Did your mother ever tell you where you were born?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Chicago."
"Which hospital?"
She hesitated.
"St. Margaret's, I think."
Vincent's heart began pounding.
St. Margaret's was the same hospital where Isabella had received treatment shortly before disappearing.
He looked down at the letter.
Then back at Evelyn.
A terrible possibility formed.
"Could we examine the rest of these records together?" he asked.
Evelyn nodded.
They found another envelope beneath the box's lining.
Inside was an old birth certificate.
Evelyn Gallagher.
Born April 3, 2001.
Mother: Catherine Gallagher.
The father's name had been left blank.
But attached to the certificate was a handwritten medical note.
Child placed under protective identity arrangement.
Vincent stared.
Then noticed a second name written beneath the note.
Biological mother: Isabella Moretti.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
"What?"
Vincent couldn't speak.
He looked at her.
Twenty-eight years old.
Abandoned by fortune.
Rejected because of her appearance.
Homeless.
Hungry.
And somehow connected to the sister he had mourned for decades.
Evelyn whispered:
"Vincent... are you saying my mother wasn't really my mother?"
His eyes filled.
May you like
Then he answered:
"I'm saying there's a possibility Isabella Moretti was your birth mother. And if that's true, you may be my niece."
