Chapter 10 - THE SECRET HIDDEN IN EVELYN'S NAME

Evelyn had spent her entire life believing she was ordinary.
Too poor.
Too heavy.
Too unimportant for powerful people to notice.
Now she was learning that the Moretti family had been watching her since childhood.
And the reason had nothing to do with her appearance.
It had everything to do with what her mother knew.
Isabella looked at Evelyn.
"Catherine helped me escape with financial records."
Evelyn swallowed.
"Records of what?"
"Illegal shipments, stolen funds, and payments connected to several violent crimes."
Vincent lowered his head.
His father's organization had been ruthless.
He knew that.
But hearing the details made him realize how much suffering had been hidden behind the Moretti name.
Isabella continued.
"Catherine copied the records and arranged for them to be stored securely."
Evelyn looked up.
"Where?"
"In a trust archive."
Vincent frowned.
"What trust?"
Isabella reached into a drawer.
She removed a small folder.
Inside were legal documents.
Evelyn's name appeared on the first page.
Evelyn Catherine Gallagher.
Her heart pounded.
"Why am I listed?"
Isabella smiled sadly.
"Because your mother wanted the evidence preserved somewhere Leonard couldn't easily access."
She pointed toward the documents.
Catherine had established a protected trust.
Its purpose was to fund legal assistance for victims harmed by the criminal operations and preserve important records.
Evelyn was named as a future trustee.
But the trust could only be activated after she reached adulthood and received independent legal advice.
Evelyn stared.
"My mother never told me."
"She was afraid."
Vincent looked toward the document.
"Did she leave Evelyn money?"
Isabella nodded.
"Some."
"How much?"
"Enough to help her build a different life."
Evelyn felt tears rise.
For years, she'd struggled to survive.
Gone hungry.
Lost her apartment.
Begged for work.
And her mother had left something behind that she never knew existed.
"Why wasn't I contacted?"
Isabella lowered her eyes.
"Because Leonard intercepted the trust correspondence."
Vincent's jaw tightened.
Another betrayal.
Another life damaged by people who believed wealth gave them the right to control others.
Evelyn wiped her tears.
"Is the trust still valid?"
Isabella nodded.
"Investigators and independent attorneys are reviewing it."
Vincent looked at Evelyn.
"Whatever happens, you will have your own legal representation."
She smiled faintly.
"Thank you."
Then Isabella looked toward Vincent.
"There's something else about Sophia."
He went still.
"What?"
"She discovered Leonard had been manipulating the trust."
Vincent's chest tightened.
"That's why he targeted her?"
Isabella nodded.
"She was preparing to report him."
Silence.
Then Isabella continued.
"She left a recording."
Vincent stopped breathing.
"A recording?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"In the archive."
Evelyn looked between them.
"Do we have access?"
Isabella nodded slowly.
"With the proper authorization."
Several days later, investigators retrieved the archive.
Inside was a sealed evidence drive.
The recording was authenticated and reviewed.
Sophia's voice filled the room.
"Leonard, I know what you've done."
Vincent closed his eyes.
He hadn't heard his wife's voice in fourteen months.
The recording continued.
"You've been using the family accounts to conceal crimes."
Leonard's voice answered.
"You don't understand the consequences."
Sophia replied:
"I understand perfectly."
May you like
Then she said something that made Vincent's heart stop.
"And I know who helped you arrange Isabella's disappearance."
