Chapter 7 - The First Client

Rachel sat in the comfortable armchair across from my desk, her hands trembling violently as she clutched a paper cup of warm chamomile tea. She looked exhausted, her eyes deeply ringed with dark circles, and her posture was curled inward, as if she were actively trying to make herself as small and invisible as possible. I recognized that exact defensive posture instantly. I had lived inside it for years.
I did not sit behind my massive oak desk. Instead, I pulled up a matching armchair and sat directly across from her, completely removing the physical barrier of authority.
"You do not have to apologize for crying, Rachel," I said gently, handing her a box of soft tissues. "This office is a completely safe space. Everything you say here is strictly confidential, and absolutely no one is going to judge you or tell you that you are overreacting."
"He took everything," Rachel whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes and tracking down her pale cheeks. "I tried to buy groceries yesterday for my kids, and my debit card was declined. I called the bank in a panic, and they said the account had been emptied and completely closed. He told me that if I tried to leave, he would leave me penniless and take the children. I don't know how to fight him, Emily. I don't even know how much money we actually have."
"Financial abuse thrives in the dark, Rachel," I explained calmly, leaning forward to make direct, grounding eye contact. "Your husband wants you to believe that you are powerless because he is absolutely terrified of what will happen when you realize you aren't. We are going to turn the lights on."
I opened a fresh legal notepad and picked up my silver pen.
"First, we are going to run a comprehensive, silent credit check to see exactly what debts and assets are attached to your social security number," I detailed smoothly. "Then, Eleanor is going to file an emergency ex parte motion in family court to force the immediate release of temporary living expenses. He thinks he has locked the doors, but he doesn't realize that we possess the legal keys to break them wide open."
Rachel looked up, a tiny spark of genuine hope breaking through the suffocating despair in her eyes.

"Can you really do that?" she asked, her voice shaking slightly less.
"Rachel, I promise you," I smiled with absolute, unshakeable confidence. "We are going to take your life back. Step by step, dollar by dollar."
