Chapter 22 - The Silent Night

|

The chaotic energy of the gala and the media frenzy that followed eventually faded, giving way to the deep, quiet chill of late December. The holidays had arrived in Evanston, wrapping the city in a thick, pristine blanket of white snow.

It was Christmas Eve. The beautiful condo was dimly lit, illuminated only by the soft, warm glow of the massive, decorated tree standing in the corner of the living room. Soft jazz music played quietly from the stereo.

I sat on the plush rug near the fireplace, wearing comfortable pajamas and holding a mug of hot chocolate. Lily was asleep upstairs in her room, safely tucked under a heavy quilt, dreaming of the presents she would open in the morning.

I looked around the beautiful, silent room. There was no tension thick enough to cut with a knife. There was no fear that a dropped glass or a loud noise would trigger a violent, screaming argument. There was only absolute, unshatterable peace.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, silver ornament I had bought earlier that day. It was engraved with a single word: Freedom.

I stood up and walked over to the tree, finding the perfect branch near the top, and carefully hung the ornament. It sparkled brilliantly in the warm fairy lights.

I remembered the last Christmas I had spent with Jason. He had thrown my carefully wrapped gifts into the hallway, screaming that I was ungrateful and stupid, leaving me weeping silently on the bathroom floor while he left to attend a party with his mistress.

I took a deep breath, letting the horrific memory wash over me and then completely drain away, like water off a stone. It couldn't hurt me anymore. I walked over to the large glass window, looking out at the snow falling gently over the frozen expanse of Lake Michigan. I wrapped my arms around myself in a warm, protective embrace. I had given my daughter the greatest Christmas gift possible: a home filled entirely with love, safety, and beautiful, unbroken silence.
