Chapter 16 - The Art Exhibition

|

The first week of December brought an event that felt far more important than any massive legal victory or corporate milestone: Lily’s preschool was hosting its annual winter art exhibition. The small school gymnasium had been transformed into a makeshift gallery, with colorful construction paper masterpieces pinned to every available wall.

I walked through the double doors holding Lily’s hand. She was practically vibrating with excitement, wearing a beautiful dark green velvet dress. Eleanor and Mark had both insisted on coming, walking closely behind us and acting like fiercely proud, deeply invested honorary grandparents.

"Where is it, Lily?" Mark asked, scanning the walls with a massive, warm smile. "Show me the masterpiece."

"It's over here!" Lily squealed, tugging forcefully on my hand and leading our small entourage toward the far corner of the gymnasium.

We stopped in front of a large piece of heavy white paper. It was a chaotic, brilliant explosion of finger paint—swirls of bright yellow, deep blue, and vibrant red. At the bottom, written in the teacher's neat handwriting, was the title Lily had given it: My Happy House.

"It is absolutely breathtaking," Eleanor declared seriously, adjusting her glasses as if she were analyzing a priceless Picasso in a museum. "The use of color is highly advanced for a three-year-old."

"I used all the yellow," Lily explained proudly, pointing a tiny finger at a massive blob in the center. "Because yellow is the color of the sun, and the sun makes everything warm."

I stared at the painting, feeling a profound, heavy wave of emotion wash over my entire soul. A year ago, Lily had been a quiet, terrified toddler who hid behind the sofa when doors closed too loudly. Now, she was a bright, expressive child who associated her home with sunshine and warmth.

I knelt down and pulled her into a tight, crushing hug, burying my face in her soft curls.

"It is the most beautiful painting I have ever seen in my entire life," I whispered into her ear. "I am going to buy a massive gold frame and hang it right in the center of my office."

Lily giggled, wrapping her arms around my neck. The darkness was permanently gone, completely painted over by the brilliant, unshatterable colors of our new life.
