Chapter 23 - The Birthday

|
Spring arrived, melting the snow and bringing vibrant, blooming life back to the shores of Lake Michigan. The arrival of May marked the most important milestone of our year: Lily’s fourth birthday.
Instead of hosting a stressful, elaborate party to impress strangers—the kind Diane Bennett used to forcefully organize—I decided to host a small, intimate gathering at our private lake house in Wisconsin.
The wooden deck was decorated with bright pastel balloons and a massive banner reading Happy Birthday Lily! The afternoon sun was warm, reflecting off the calm blue water.
Lily was running wildly across the green grass, wearing a bright pink swimsuit and laughing hysterically as Mark chased her with a completely harmless, slow-moving water gun. Eleanor was sitting comfortably on a lounge chair, wearing sunglasses and holding a glass of iced tea, watching the chaotic joy with a wide, genuine smile.
"She is getting so fast, Emily," Eleanor laughed, as Lily successfully dodged Mark and hid behind a large oak tree. "I think Mark is actually losing this battle."
"He definitely is," I smiled, setting a massive, beautifully decorated chocolate cake on the outdoor picnic table.
I stood back and watched my daughter. She was four years old. She was fiercely independent, incredibly loud, and completely devoid of the crushing fear that had marked her infancy. The faint, almost invisible scar on her cheek was the only remaining physical evidence that she had ever lived in a nightmare.
"Okay, truce!" Mark panted, dramatically throwing his hands in the air and falling onto the grass. "You win, Lily! The monster is defeated!"

Lily cheered triumphantly, running over and gently tapping him on the head. "I am the strongest!" she declared.
I felt a profound wave of emotion lock my chest. She was the strongest. We both were. I walked over to the table and lit the four bright candles on her cake, calling everyone over. As Lily closed her eyes tight and blew out the candles, surrounded by the family we had chosen and built from scratch, I knew that every single wish I had ever made in the dark had finally, completely come true.
