Chapter 9 - THE MAN INSIDE CALDER TOWER

Raymond reached the archive before security.

Because his access had never truly been removed.

Vincent understood that too late.

He and Hannah raced back to Philadelphia.

Thomas stayed with Sabrina under police protection.

At Calder Tower, smoke already poured from the forty-second floor.

“Fire.”

Hannah stared upward.

Raymond was burning records.

Not only Whitaker deeds.

Everything.

Proof of bribery.

Illegal acquisitions.

Historic ownership.

Vincent looked at Marco.

“Evacuate.”

“Done.”

They took the emergency stairs.

Forty-two floors.

Hannah hated every one.

At thirty-eight, Vincent grabbed her arm.

She glared.

“Don’t.”

“You’re about to pass out.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re lying.”

She almost smiled.

Progress looked strange.

They reached the archive.

Sprinklers.

Smoke.

Raymond stood near a metal cabinet.

Older.

Still broad.

Vincent recognized his father’s eyes in him.

“Uncle.”

Raymond smiled.

“Finally.”

Hannah moved beside Vincent.

Raymond looked at her.

“There’s the heiress.”

“I prefer Hannah.”

“You have no idea what you inherited.”

“Debt, crime, and bad men?”

Vincent almost laughed.

Raymond did not.

He held up a folder.

Original Whitaker deeds.

Hannah’s pulse changed.

“Give them to me.”

“No.”

“What do you want now?”

“Nothing.”

That was worse.

Raymond tossed part of the file into the flames.

Hannah moved.

Vincent caught himself before grabbing her.

Marco covered them.

Raymond laughed.

“This was never about ownership.”

Vincent frowned.

“What?”

“It was about Dominic.”

Silence.

“He destroyed everything I built.”

“You were partners.”

“We were brothers.”

“Not the same.”

Raymond’s expression twisted.

“He took the organization. Elena. influence. everything.”

“You wanted revenge.”

“Yes.”

“Through my marriage.”

“Yes.”

“Hannah had nothing to do with it.”

Raymond looked at her.

“She had everything to do with it.”

Then he revealed the ugliest truth.

Dominic planned Vincent’s marriage to Hannah.

Not romantically.

Strategically.

He discovered who she was.

Knew the Whitaker trust existed.

Encouraged Vincent to attend the charity dinner where they met.

Vincent stopped breathing.

Hannah looked at him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

He answered instantly.

Raymond smiled.

“He didn’t.”

Good.

At least that remained real.

“He fell in love with the bait.”

Hannah’s face hardened.

“I wasn’t bait.”

“No?”

Raymond laughed.

“Your mother knew exactly what she was doing when she put you near him.”

Hannah froze.

“My mother?”

Raymond continued.

“Helen wanted the families merged too.”

“Why?”

“She believed Vincent could return what Dominic stole.”

Vincent looked at Hannah.

Their first meeting.

A charity orchard fundraiser.

Hannah serving cider.

Vincent making a terrible joke about apples.

She laughed.

He came back the next day.

That had been manipulated from both sides.

But everything after?

Their first kiss.

The proposal.

Nine years.

Those belonged to them.

Raymond threw another page into the fire.

Hannah lunged.

This time Vincent moved with her.

Marco tackled Raymond.

Hannah reached the folder.

Half burned.

Enough survived.

Then Raymond grabbed a gun.

Vincent turned.

Gunshot.

Hannah screamed.

Vincent staggered.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Marco fired.

Raymond dropped.

Alive.

Wounded.

Hannah caught Vincent before he hit the floor.

His hand closed weakly around hers.

“Hannah.”

“Don’t.”

She pressed her hands over the wound.

“Don’t you dare.”

He almost smiled.

“You touched me.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“This is not romantic.”

“No.”

“Stay awake.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Then he whispered:

May you like

“I’m sorry about the apples.”

And lost consciousness.
