Chapter 6 - THE MAN LIVING UNDER ANOTHER NAME

The clue was an apple variety.
Of course.
Helen wrote:
Find Thomas where the Northern Spy grows beside the sea.
Walter understood first.
“Maine.”
Northern Spy apples.
Coastal orchard.
Hannah laughed through tears.
“My family hides people with fruit.”
Vincent almost smiled.
We found Thomas Whitaker near Camden.
He lived under the name Thomas Reed.
Sixty-three.
Gray-haired.
Thin.
Alive.
When Hannah stepped out of the car, he stopped walking.
She stared at him.
“Dad?”
Thomas’s face broke.
“Hannah.”
She did not move.
Then he crossed the driveway.
She let him hug her.
For exactly three seconds.
Then pushed him away.
“You left.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“You let me think you were dead.”
“I know.”
“My mother died looking for you.”
His face crumpled.
“I know.”
Hannah slapped him.
Hard.
Vincent said nothing.
Thomas accepted it.
“I deserved that.”
Then Hannah started crying.
So did he.
Eventually, inside the small farmhouse, Thomas told us everything.
He did not disappear willingly.
Raymond Calder’s men abducted him.
Held him for six weeks.
Wanted the bunker location.
Thomas refused.
Then Elena Calder helped him escape.
Vincent stared.
“My mother?”
“She saved my life.”
“Why?”
“She wanted to destroy Dominic.”
Thomas looked at Hannah.
“Your mother and Elena worked together.”
Vincent’s entire childhood kept changing.
“Why didn’t you come home?”
“Because Raymond threatened Hannah.”
Hannah froze.
“He had photographs.”
School.
Playground.
Walter’s farm.
Thomas believed staying away protected her.
Hannah closed her eyes.
Another man calling absence protection.
Vincent noticed.
So did Thomas.
“I was wrong.”
That mattered.
“I should have trusted Walter and Helen with the decision.”
“Yes,” Hannah said.
“No excuse?”
“No.”
Thomas nodded.
Then he looked at Vincent.
“Your father found me again years later.”
“When?”
“Two months before Helen died.”
Vincent’s face hardened.
“What did he want?”
“The bunker records.”
“And?”
“I told him I had destroyed them.”
“Did he believe you?”
“No.”
Thomas looked at Hannah.
“He threatened Helen.”
Hannah went pale.
“Did he kill her?”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Vincent stopped breathing.
“Proof?”
Thomas opened a metal case.
Inside was an audio recording.
Dominic Calder’s voice.
Clear.
Ordering Silas Grant to “solve the Helen problem.”
Hannah looked at Vincent.
He could not speak.
His father had killed her mother.
No matter that Vincent was eighteen.
No matter that he had never known.
The bloodline suddenly felt like an accusation.
Thomas noticed.
“Don’t.”
Vincent looked at him.
“You have every reason to hate me.”
“I hate what Dominic did.”
“Same name.”
“Different man.”
Hannah looked down.
Not ready to say that.
Fair.
Then Thomas said:
“There’s more.”
Of course.
He looked at Vincent.
“Dominic wasn’t the one who ordered your affair.”
Vincent frowned.
“What?”
“Sabrina wasn’t random.”
Hannah’s face changed.
Thomas continued.
“She was placed near you.”
“By who?”
Thomas looked at Hannah.
“Someone who wanted your marriage to collapse before you learned about the Calder-Whitaker trust.”
Vincent stared.
“What trust?”
May you like
Thomas answered:
“The one that says if Hannah divorces you because of marital misconduct, she inherits controlling interest in Calder Shipping.”
