Chapter 2 - THE PHOTOGRAPH FROM TWELVE YEARS AGO

Hannah’s father was not dead.
Walter Whitaker was alive and still running the apple orchard in northern Pennsylvania.
That meant the message could not be about him.
Unless someone meant another father.
Vincent sat in his study at 2:14 in the morning with the photograph spread beneath a lamp.
Marco had retrieved Sabrina’s abandoned coat from security.
The image showed Vincent and Hannah’s bedroom window.
Taken recently.
Close enough to mean someone had been on the property.
The handwriting bothered him.
Not because he recognized it.
Because Marco did.
“That looks like Raymond Calder.”
Vincent went still.
“My uncle?”
Marco nodded.
Raymond Calder had died twelve years earlier.
At least officially.
Heart attack.
Private funeral.
Closed casket.
Vincent looked at the writing again.
“What does Raymond have to do with Hannah?”
Marco hesitated.
“Maybe nothing.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It’s the only one I have.”
Vincent picked up the security keycard.
Sabrina had executive access to his tower.
Who authorized it?
The digital log answered.
Account holder:
Raymond C.
Vincent stared.
“That user was deleted.”
“It should have been.”
“Who reactivated it?”
Marco checked.
His face changed.
“Your brother.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t have a brother.”
Marco looked at him.
“Yes, you do.”
The room went silent.
Vincent stared.
“My father had another son?”
“Your father didn’t.”
Vincent frowned.
Marco continued.
“Your mother did.”
Everything inside him went cold.
“My mother died when I was seventeen.”
“I know.”
“Her name was Elena Calder.”
“Yes.”
“She had one child.”
Marco looked away.
“No.”
Vincent stood.
“How long have you known?”
“Three days.”
“That is three days too long.”
Marco accepted the anger.
“I was verifying it.”
“Name.”
“Thomas Whitaker.”
Vincent stopped.
Whitaker.
Hannah’s surname before marriage.
“What?”
Marco continued carefully.
“Your mother had a son before she married your father.”
“No.”
“She was nineteen.”
“With who?”
“Samuel Whitaker.”
Vincent stared.
“Hannah’s grandfather?”
Marco nodded.
The room seemed to tilt.
Hannah’s father, Walter, had a half brother.
Thomas.
And Thomas was also Vincent’s maternal half brother.
Which made Hannah—
No.
Marco saw the panic.
“Not blood-related to you.”
Vincent looked at him.
“Explain quickly.”
“Thomas was adopted by Samuel Whitaker. Not biological.”
Vincent exhaled.
Barely.
“Where is Thomas now?”
Marco’s expression changed.
“Missing since 2009.”
Twelve years ago.
Same year Raymond Calder supposedly died.
Same year Hannah’s biological father—
Vincent stopped.
“Hannah’s father.”
“Walter?”
“No.”
Marco froze.
“You think Walter isn’t—”
“I don’t know.”
Vincent grabbed the old family archive.
Hannah had always called Walter Dad.
Always.
But she rarely discussed birth records.
Her mother had died when Hannah was ten.
Walter raised her afterward.
Vincent pulled up marriage records.
Helen Whitaker married Walter Whitaker when Hannah was three.
Three.
Not birth.
Stepparent.
His heart slowed.
“Hannah’s biological father.”
Marco searched.
Records sealed.
Then one old hospital form appeared.
Father listed:
Thomas Whitaker.
Vincent stopped breathing.
Hannah’s biological father was his mother’s missing son.
His half brother.
Which meant Hannah was Vincent’s niece.
No.
He stared at the date.
Something was wrong.
The paternity field had been amended later.
Original entry beneath the scanned correction:
Father: UNKNOWN.
Thomas had adopted Hannah.
Not fathered her.
Still.
Why had no one told her?
Then Vincent’s phone buzzed.
Hannah.
One message.
I found a birth certificate in Sabrina’s coat.
A second message followed.
It says Thomas Whitaker was my father.
Vincent closed his eyes.
May you like
Before he could respond, a third arrived.
And if that’s true, Vincent, someone has been lying to both of us since before we met.
