Chapter 9 - The Charity Money That Cost My Wife Her Life

Claire had spent years raising money for children who couldn't afford medical care.
Now I was discovering that Richard Hart had been stealing from the very foundation she helped build.
The records showed millions transferred from charitable accounts into private investment companies.
Some payments were disguised as consulting fees.
Others were recorded as equipment purchases for hospitals that never received the equipment.
Claire noticed the discrepancies because she reviewed the foundation's annual reports.
She asked questions.
She requested invoices.
She threatened to contact investigators.
Then she gave birth to Noah.
And died.
I stared at the documents.
My hands trembled.
"How long did you know?" I asked Margaret.
She looked down.
"Claire told me two weeks before Noah was born."
"And you didn't tell me?"
"I thought Richard would correct the problem."
I almost laughed.
"You thought a man stealing millions from sick children would simply stop because you asked nicely?"
Margaret began crying.
"I was afraid."
"Of him?"
She nodded.
"Richard threatened to expose the criminal side of your businesses if I didn't convince Claire to stay quiet."
I stared at her.
For years, I'd built an empire around fear.
Now that same fear had been used against my family.
I had made myself powerful enough to frighten strangers.
But not trustworthy enough for my own wife to come to me.
That realization hurt more than anything.
The investigation continued.
Richard Hart's financial records were preserved.
Dr. Evelyn Hart's involvement in Claire's treatment came under independent review.
And Vanessa's messages were examined after investigators discovered she'd been communicating with her father about Claire's foundation.
But the most devastating evidence came from Claire's own phone.
A backup had been preserved in a secure account.
Inside was an unsent message addressed to me.
Dante, I need you to come home.
I closed my eyes.
The message continued.
Something is wrong at the foundation. Richard is threatening me, and your mother doesn't believe how serious this is.
Tears streamed down my face.
I don't know who to trust anymore.
Then the final sentence.
Please, for once, choose us before your business.
I lowered the phone.
For a long moment, I couldn't speak.
Grace sat beside me.
She didn't tell me I was a good man.
She didn't pretend Claire's suffering could be erased.
She simply stayed.
Eventually, I looked at her.
"She asked me to come home."
Grace nodded.
"I know."
"I didn't."
Her eyes filled.
"No."
I covered my face.
For the first time since Claire died, I allowed myself to feel the full weight of what I'd lost.
Not just my wife.
The future we'd promised each other.
The life Noah should've had.
And the chance to be the husband she needed.
Then Gabriel entered.
His face was pale.
"Boss, investigators found something in Richard Hart's private office."
I looked up.
"What?"
"A signed medical consent form."
My stomach tightened.
"Whose signature?"
Gabriel swallowed.
"Yours."
I stared.
"That's impossible."
He nodded.
"The document appears to authorize a procedure Claire never agreed to."
My blood turned cold.
May you like
Then Gabriel delivered the worst part.
"Your signature was forged."
