Chapter 1 - The Slap That Ended My Engagement

The first thing I noticed was the red handprint on Grace Miller's cheek.
The second was my three-year-old son trembling behind her legs.
And the third was the expression on Vanessa Hart's face when she realized I had witnessed everything.
"Dante," she whispered.
My name is Dante Cole.
For fifteen years, people in Miami had been afraid of hearing those two words spoken in the wrong tone.
But that afternoon, I wasn't thinking about my reputation.
I was looking at Noah.
My little boy was crying so hard he could barely breathe.
"Don't hurt Mommy Grace!" he screamed.
Vanessa stepped toward me.
"Dante, this isn't what it looks like."
I slowly turned my head.
"Then explain what it looks like."
She swallowed.
"Grace was being disrespectful. She was telling Noah things she had no right to say."
Grace shook her head.
"I didn't—"
Vanessa pointed at her.
"Don't interrupt me!"
"Enough."
One word.
Vanessa went silent.
I walked toward Noah and knelt in front of him.
"Hey, buddy."
He threw himself into my arms.
"Daddy, Vanessa hit Mommy!"
"I know."
"She was mean!"
I held him tightly.
"You're safe. I'm right here."
Behind me, Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Dante, he's three. Children exaggerate."
I stood slowly.
"Did you slap Grace?"
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
"She was getting too familiar with my future stepson."
I stared at her.
"Answer the question."
"Yes! I slapped her!"
The room went completely still.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"She needed to understand her place."
I looked at Grace.
She stood beside the couch, one hand pressed against her cheek.
Her eyes were wet.
But she hadn't said a word in her own defense.
That hurt more than I expected.
For nearly three years, she'd cared for my son when grief had made me barely capable of caring for myself.
She'd stayed awake through fevers.
Comforted nightmares.
Remembered birthdays.
And taught Noah how to laugh.
Vanessa had been in our lives for six months.
And she'd just struck the woman my son trusted most.
I turned toward my fiancée.
"Take off the ring."
She blinked.
"What?"
"Your engagement ring."
Her face went white.
"Dante, you're overreacting."
"Take it off."
She stared at me.
"You can't seriously be choosing a nanny over me."
I stepped closer.
"I'm choosing not to marry someone who assaults an employee in front of my child."
Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.
"Your mother warned me about this!"
Something inside me went cold.
"My mother?"
Vanessa immediately looked away.
I noticed.
"What did Margaret tell you?"
"Nothing."
"Vanessa."
She swallowed.
Then spoke the words that changed everything.
"Your mother said Grace was becoming a problem."
I stared at her.
"What kind of problem?"
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"She said if we didn't get rid of Grace before the wedding, Noah would never accept me as his mother."
Noah gripped my hand.
"Mommy Grace stays."
I looked at my son.
Then at Grace.
Then back at Vanessa.
"Pack your things."
Vanessa stared.
"Dante—"
"You're leaving this house today."
Her expression hardened.
"You'll regret humiliating me."
I said nothing.
She pulled the diamond ring from her finger and dropped it onto the marble floor.
Then she grabbed her purse and stormed toward the front entrance.
At the doorway, she stopped.
Turned.
And smiled in a way that made my blood run cold.
"You think Grace is innocent?"
I looked at her.
"What are you talking about?"
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Ask your precious nanny why she applied to work here four months after Claire died."
May you like
Then she delivered the final blow.
"Ask her why she knew your wife's name before you ever introduced them."
