Chapter 5 - The Grandmother Who Watched in Silence

Margaret Cole had spent her entire life teaching me that family loyalty came before everything.

Now I was staring at footage proving she'd watched my fiancée strike the woman raising my son.

The video played silently on Gabriel's tablet.

Vanessa approached Grace.

They argued.

Then Vanessa slapped her.

Grace stumbled.

Noah screamed.

And behind the staircase, my mother stood perfectly still.

She didn't intervene.

Didn't comfort Noah.

Didn't even look surprised.

I watched the footage twice.

Then turned toward Gabriel.

"Preserve the original."

He nodded.

"Already done."

"Give a copy to Grace's attorney."

Grace looked up sharply.

"My attorney?"

I turned toward her.

"You're entitled to protect yourself."

She swallowed.

"I can't afford one."

"I know."

I hesitated.

Then added, "I can help you find independent legal assistance, but you should choose who represents you."

Her expression softened.

"Thank you."

That evening, I asked my mother to come to the study.

She arrived wearing pearls and an elegant cream dress.

"Dante, darling."

I didn't stand.

"Sit down."

Her smile faded.

"What's wrong?"

I turned the tablet toward her.

The footage began playing.

Margaret watched silently.

When it ended, she folded her hands.

"Vanessa lost her temper."

I stared at her.

"She assaulted Grace."

"That girl has been overstepping for months."

"That girl raised my son."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"She's an employee."

"She's a person."

My mother blinked.

For a moment, she looked almost offended.

"Dante, you're letting your emotions interfere with family decisions."

I leaned forward.

"You watched Vanessa hit her."

Margaret looked away.

"I thought they needed to resolve their differences."

"With Noah standing there?"

Silence.

I stood.

"Why did you want Grace gone?"

Margaret's jaw tightened.

"Because she's becoming too important."

"To Noah?"

"To you."

The words struck harder than I expected.

My mother continued.

"You're forgetting Claire."

I stared at her.

"Don't use my wife to justify cruelty."

For the first time, Margaret looked uncertain.

Then I asked the question I'd been avoiding.

"What happened at the hospital three years ago?"

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"Dante, what are you talking about?"

"Claire's records."

She looked toward the door.

I stepped closer.

"Why were you involved in changing her medical appointments?"

Margaret's lips parted.

Then she whispered, "Who told you that?"

I felt something inside me break.

I hadn't told her anyone had.

Her question was answer enough.

Before she could speak again, Gabriel entered.

"Boss, we located the nurse who handled Claire's final medication review."

My heart pounded.

"Where?"

"She moved to Tampa two years ago."

"And?"

Gabriel swallowed.

"She says she was paid to remain silent."

I stared at my mother.

Margaret's face went white.

May you like

Then Gabriel delivered the final revelation.

"The payment came from a company owned by Vanessa Hart's father."
