Chapter 14 - The Boy Who Chose His Own Mother

Six months after Vanessa Hart slapped Grace Miller, our house finally felt like a home again.

Not because every problem had disappeared.

The legal proceedings continued.

The financial investigations were still unfolding.

And my mother's relationship with Noah remained carefully supervised while she worked to rebuild the trust she'd broken.

But something had changed.

The fear was leaving.

Noah laughed more.

He slept through most nights.

And he no longer looked toward the staircase whenever someone raised their voice.

Grace had continued working with us for several months after the incident, but eventually, she told me she wanted to return to school.

She was only one semester away from completing her nursing degree.

I encouraged her to apply.

She looked suspicious.

"You're not going to ask me to stay?"

I smiled.

"I'd like you to stay in our lives. But I don't want you giving up your future to make mine easier."

Her eyes filled.

"That's a very different answer from the Dante Cole I met three years ago."

"I know."

She laughed softly.

"Good."

Grace returned to school.

Rosa helped care for Noah during the day.

And I rearranged my schedule to spend more time with my son.

There were difficult weeks.

Days when Noah missed Grace terribly.

Nights when I struggled to comfort him.

But instead of calling her and demanding she come home, I learned how to parent my child.

I read bedtime stories.

Prepared breakfast.

Attended preschool meetings.

And discovered that three-year-olds have very strong opinions about which socks are acceptable.

One evening, Noah insisted on wearing one red sock and one yellow sock.

"Buddy, those don't match."

He looked at me seriously.

"They're friends."

I stared.

Then laughed.

"Fair enough."

When Grace visited, Noah ran into her arms.

"Mommy Grace!"

She hugged him tightly.

"Hey, my little man."

I watched from the doorway.

For the first time, I didn't feel threatened by the fact that my son loved someone else so deeply.

I felt grateful.

One Saturday afternoon, Grace came to the estate after completing her final nursing examination.

She was smiling.

I knew immediately.

"You passed?"

She nodded.

"I passed!"

Noah began jumping.

"Mommy's a nurse!"

Grace laughed.

"Almost, sweetheart. I still have licensing requirements to finish."

He didn't care.

He threw his arms around her.

I joined them.

For one beautiful moment, we stood together in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where Claire used to dance while cooking.

The same kitchen that had been silent for years after she died.

Now it was filled with laughter again.

That evening, Grace and I sat beside the pool.

The sky glowed orange above Biscayne Bay.

I took her hand.

"Grace, there's something I need to ask."

She smiled.

"That sounds serious."

"It is."

I looked at her.

"For three years, you've loved Noah as though he were your own."

Her expression softened.

"And I've spent the last six months learning how to love without controlling."

She nodded.

"I've noticed."

I took a breath.

"Would you be willing to explore building a future together? Not because Noah needs a mother. Not because I need someone to keep this house running. But because I love you."

Tears filled her eyes.

She looked toward the water.

Then back at me.

"I love you too, Dante."

My heart stopped.

She smiled through tears.

"But I want us to take our time."

I nodded immediately.

"Whatever you need."

She laughed.

"Careful. I'm going to remember you said that."

I smiled.

"Please do."

That night, after Grace left, I went upstairs to check on Noah.

He was awake.

Holding the gray stuffed elephant Claire had left him.

"Daddy?"

I sat beside him.

"Yeah, buddy?"

"Are you going to marry Mommy Grace?"

I nearly laughed.

"That's a big question."

He studied me.

"Do you love her?"

I nodded.

"Very much."

Noah smiled.

"Good."

Then he looked toward Claire's photograph.

"Mommy Claire loves her too."

I swallowed.

"Why do you say that?"

He pointed toward the elephant.

"Because Mommy Claire wrote a letter."

My heart stopped.

I had searched Claire's box years ago.

I'd read the note beneath the elephant.

But Noah was pointing toward a seam in its back.

A seam I'd never noticed.

Inside was another folded letter.

May you like

And on the front, Claire had written:

FOR NOAH, WHEN HE FINDS HIS SECOND MOMMY.
