Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN TAKING ASA’S EMPIRE

Elena Voss had done everything legally enough to be dangerous.
Asa missing.
Rumored dead.
Board emergency.
Bank concerns.
Insurance triggers.
She froze several accounts.
Moved operating authority to interim committee.
Reasonable on paper.
Then she positioned herself as chair.
Not theft yet.
Control.
Asa could simply appear.
Problem solved?
Not exactly.
Because if he reappeared, everyone who tried to kill him would know he survived.
They already probably did.
Still, secrecy had expired.
So Asa chose public reentry.
Not a ballroom.
Boardroom.
Legitimate Thornton Logistics headquarters.
Lawyers.
Independent directors.
Medical documentation.
He walked in thinner.
Scarred.
Alive.
Elena’s face reportedly went white.
Marin did not attend.
Important.
This was Asa’s war.
Not hers.
Elena denied betrayal.
Then financial audit.
Transfers to Northlake affiliates.
Consulting fees.
Security-contract changes.
Vehicle access.
Nolan’s SUV assignment altered using Elena’s authorization.
There.
She gave Gideon access to the vehicle.
Then communication records:
Elena to Gideon:
Langford basement staff still active?
Gideon:
Yes. Callaway works nights.
She knew Marin.
Before Asa disappeared.
Then:
Elena:
If he reaches her, survival probability?
Gideon:
Enough.
Why would conspirators want Asa to survive?
That bothered everyone.
Then they understood.
Elena did not want him dead immediately.
She wanted him missing.
Long enough to trigger governance transfers.
Then if he later returned weakened and unstable?
She could argue incapacity.
Brilliant.
Cruel.
Asa’s near-death was a corporate coup.
Gideon wanted clinical proof.
Elena wanted control.
Same experiment.
Different profit.
Then one message:
Elena:
Keep Callaway indebted. We may need her cooperative.
Marin stared.
That was personal.
She had never met Elena.
Yet the woman had discussed her debt like a leash.
Then enforcement agencies moved on financial evidence.
Elena fled.
Not internationally.
To Gideon.
Where?
Unknown.
But money trail pointed toward one of Northlake’s old cold-storage facilities.
Asa wanted to send men.
Nolan did too.
Marin said:
“No.”
Asa looked at her.
“Not your call.”
Correct.
Progress.
Then he considered.
“I’m still not sending them.”
Good.
He turned everything to investigators instead.
Not sainthood.
Strategy.
If Elena and Gideon died in a warehouse, records vanished.
If arrested, records talked.
Then Marin’s retaliation case against Langford settled.
Back pay.
Damages.
Debt claims separately suspended.
She no longer needed the basement job.
Then her new employer promoted her.
Shift operations supervisor.
Tiny title to powerful people.
Huge to her.
First office she ever had.
Window.
Small.
She bought a plant.
Killed it in two weeks.
Asa replaced it.
She made him take it back.
Then he sent instructions for plant care instead.
Better.
Their relationship hovered.
No kiss yet.
No possession.
Then Gideon contacted Marin directly.
Video.
He looked like an older version of Asa.
Same gray eyes.
Colder.
“Marin Callaway.”
She recorded through counsel.
“What do you want?”
“To finish what your mother started.”
“No.”
“I can erase your debt.”
“It’s already frozen.”
“Give you millions.”
“No.”
“Cure Asa permanently.”
She paused.
Gideon smiled.
There.
Leverage.
Then:
“Without my formula, the compound in his body will return.”
Marin’s heart stopped.
May you like
Doctors believed Asa was stable.
Gideon claimed they were wrong.
