Chapter 11 - THE DATE WITH NO BODYGUARDS INSIDE

There were bodyguards outside.

Marin knew.

Asa admitted it.

Progress.

Inside:

No private room.

No guns visible.

No one calling him boss.

They ate Thai food.

Asa hated cilantro.

Marin found that disproportionately funny.

Then he asked:

“What will you do if the debt disappears completely?”

Not:

When I pay it.

Good.

The consumer case was moving.

Hearthstone offered cancellation.

Marin refused immediate settlement until Tessa reviewed broader claims.

Smart.

Then:

“If it disappears?”

Marin thought.

“Sleep.”

Asa smiled.

“After that.”

“Take classes.”

“What kind?”

“Hotel operations. Maybe accounting.”

“Why accounting?”

“I want to understand the numbers people use to trap poor people.”

Asa looked at her carefully.

“Good answer.”

Then she asked:

“What will you do if your organization shrinks?”

His smile disappeared.

“Sleep.”

She laughed.

Then:

“After?”

“I don’t know.”

Honest.

He had built identity around control.

Without constant war, who was he?

Therapy question.

Not Marin’s responsibility.

Then Asa said:

“I want to kiss you.”

She froze.

He continued:

“I am not going to.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re thinking.”

She stared.

Then smiled.

“Correct.”

No kiss.

At the end, he asked:

“Again?”

“Yes.”

Second date.

Third.

Then Marin initiated the first kiss outside a bookstore.

Asa looked stunned.

Excellent.

Their relationship remained private at first.

Not secret.

Private.

Then Nolan found out.

“Boss, you smile now.”

Asa threatened to fire him.

Nolan told everyone.

Normal.

Meanwhile, Lena testified against Gideon.

Painful.

Detailed.

She admitted her own participation in unethical research.

No sainthood.

She accepted legal consequences where applicable and entered a protected cooperation agreement.

Marin visited occasionally.

Coffee.

Thirty minutes.

Then an hour.

Trust measured in minutes.

One day Lena brought photographs.

Marin as a baby.

Birthday.

School.

Where did Lena get years after fake death?

Investigators had Northlake surveillance files.

That felt violating.

Marin refused them at first.

Then chose a few.

Not because surveillance became okay.

Because the child in those photos was hers too.

Then final debt ruling.

Hearthstone canceled the full balance.

Refunded a portion of unlawful interest.

Amount:

$21,600.

Marin stared at the check.

Nine years of payments.

Not all returned.

Enough.

She deposited it.

No dramatic shopping spree.

Paid emergency savings.

Tuition.

New winter coat.

Good one.

Then she bought a bowl.

White ceramic.

Why?

The porridge bowl from Langford had been hotel property.

She laughed every time she remembered Asa eating from it while holding a knife.

She served him porridge in the new bowl.

He stared.

“This feels insulting.”

“It’s historical.”

He ate it anyway.

Then the federal Northlake investigation found one last file.

L-17 TERMINATION PLAN.

Lena’s fake death had not been entirely her choice.

Gideon had intended to kill her after treatment failed.

She escaped by cooperating with someone inside Thornton.

Who helped?

Asa’s father.

The same man who funded Northlake originally.

He eventually tried to destroy it.

And died shortly afterward.

Maybe natural.

May you like

Maybe not.

The story reached farther back than either of them knew.
