Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER WHO BUILT THE COLD

Gideon Thornton was twenty years older than Asa.

Same father.

Different mother.

Brilliant.

Violent.

Obsessed with science.

According to family history, Gideon died in a laboratory fire.

No body recovered.

Asa was seventeen.

His father refused to discuss it.

Now Gideon had apparently driven past the Langford in Nolan’s SUV.

Why dump Asa instead of killing him?

Marin asked.

Asa answered:

“Maybe he thought the compound would.”

Then:

“Or maybe he wanted me found.”

By Marin?

That possibility stayed between them.

Then Tessa obtained something else.

Marin’s debt records.

Her original medical debt was not ordinary.

At eighteen, Marin had undergone emergency treatment after collapsing from severe hypothermia during winter.

She remembered.

Bus stop.

Snowstorm.

Then hospital.

No insurance.

Debt:

$38,000.

Bought and resold.

Now balance after nine years of payments:

$51,400.

Predatory.

But the hospital billing code included:

NT-RSP COMPASSIONATE OFFSET.

Northlake Therapeutics.

Marin stared.

“What is that?”

Asa’s face darkened.

Northlake had partially paid her hospital bill.

Why?

Maybe monitoring.

Tessa traced ownership of the debt buyer.

Hearthstone Recovery Partners.

Parent company:

Northlake Legacy Holdings.

Asa swore.

Marin’s debt had been purchased by a company descended from the same research program connected to her mother.

She had not simply fallen into debt.

The debt had followed her intentionally.

Then Tessa found payment notes.

Quarterly reports.

Not just financial.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS.

ADDRESS.

HEALTH EVENTS.

Marin felt sick.

“They were tracking me.”

“Yes,” Asa said.

“For nine years.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

She believed him.

Barely.

Then one medical note:

SUBJECT M-2 REMAINS STABLE.

M-2.

Marin.

Subject.

Not debtor.

Then:

Thermal anomaly observed at age eighteen event. No intervention required.

Her hypothermia collapse had been monitored.

The strange warmth.

Her mother.

L-17.

Now M-2.

Marin looked at Asa.

“I’m part of their experiment.”

His jaw tightened.

“Not if I can stop it.”

There it was again.

Protector language.

Dangerous.

Marin said:

“You do not get to decide what happens to me.”

He stopped.

Then:

“You’re right.”

Quick learner.

She continued:

“We find records. We find who is doing this. Then I decide.”

“Yes.”

Tessa smiled faintly.

Then Asa’s clean phone rang.

Unknown.

He answered.

Nolan.

Asa’s entire body went still.

“Where are you?”

Nolan sounded exhausted.

“Alive.”

“That was not my question.”

“I know.”

“Did you dump me at Langford?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

Marin stared.

Asa’s eyes became lethal.

“Why?”

“Because it was the only place Gideon couldn’t search without exposing himself.”

“What?”

Nolan said:

“The basement payroll employee.”

Marin’s blood went cold.

“He wanted you near her.”

Asa looked at Marin.

Nolan continued:

“Gideon injected you knowing only Lena Callaway’s daughter could keep you alive.”

Everything stopped.

May you like

Marin had not accidentally found Asa.

She had been selected as his antidote.
