Chapter 14 - THE QUESTION ASA COULD NOT ORDER

Asa proposed in the Langford kitchen.
Marin almost killed him.
The hotel had been renovated.
New owners.
No Thornton control.
The old basement wine room remained.
Converted into storage.
They got permission to visit after hours.
Why there?
Asa said:
“Bad idea?”
“Yes.”
“Too late.”
He stood near the ovens where Marin had found him bleeding.
Then:
“This is where my life restarted.”
Marin crossed her arms.
“Mine got significantly more complicated.”
“Also true.”
He took out a ring.
Simple.
Dark metal.
Small diamond.
He knew better than theatrical.
Then stopped.
Did not kneel yet.
“Can I ask?”
Marin smiled.
“Yes.”
He knelt.
“Marin Callaway.”
“Yes?”
“I spent most of my life believing survival meant making everyone else predictable.”
Accurate.
“You were the first person I could not control.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“I hid your gun in flour.”
“That was an early warning.”
She laughed.
Then he became serious.
“You saved me before you knew my name.”
Pause.
“And then you spent years making sure I understood that did not mean I owned anything from you.”
Her eyes burned.
“My life.”
“My body.”
“My time.”
“My love.”
“All yours.”
Good.
Then:
“If you choose to share them with me, I will spend the rest of my life remembering they remain yours.”
There.
“Will you marry me?”
Marin waited.
Long enough to make him nervous.
Then:
“Yes.”
Asa exhaled.
She continued:
“Prenup.”
“Yes.”
“My job remains mine.”
“Yes.”
“No debt-style financial dependence.”
“Yes.”
“No hidden medical files.”
“Yes.”
“No tracking.”
“Unless active—”
“Asa.”
“No tracking.”
She smiled.
Then allowed him to put on the ring.
Behind the spice rack, Nolan started clapping.
Marin nearly screamed.
“What are you doing here?”
Nolan looked offended.
“I was told this was romantic.”
“Tessa.”
Tessa stepped out too.
Asa closed his eyes.
Apparently the feared criminal boss had allowed witnesses because Tessa said Marin might want them.
He had learned.
They married seven months later.
Small.
Lena attended.
Tessa.
Nolan.
Marin’s hotel colleagues.
Several men who looked extremely uncomfortable in daylight.
No media.
No mafia spectacle.
Then during vows, Asa said:
“You once covered me with two aprons and stolen tablecloths.”
Head chef from Langford shouted:
“Those were mine!”
Everyone laughed.
Marin did too.
Happy endings should contain stupid jokes.
Then something serious.
Lena gave Marin a small envelope.
Inside:
The first $2,000 Northlake paid her.
She had never spent it.
Kept the original check.
Void now.
Historical.
Marin stared.
“I don’t want it.”
“I know.”
Lena said:
“Burn it.”
They did.
Outside after the reception.

No symbolism needed.
Still felt good.
