Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THEY PLANNED TO HUMILIATE ME

Dominic Rainer hadn't lost control by accident.
He'd wanted me frightened.
Embarrassed.
Cornered in front of witnesses.
And desperate enough to sign whatever paper he placed before me.
That was what the recovered security messages suggested.
I sat in Rebecca's office while she explained the next discovery.
Conrad had prepared a document titled:
BENNETT TRUST RELEASE AGREEMENT.
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Rebecca answered carefully.
"It appears designed to make you surrender any rights you might hold under the original charitable trust."
I stared.
"And Dominic was supposed to get my signature?"
"According to the messages, yes."
My hands began trembling.
For seven years, I'd worked myself exhausted trying to avoid the people who threatened my mother.
Now I was discovering they'd been waiting for the moment they could force me to sign away the last thing she tried to protect.
Rebecca turned another page.
The agreement was accompanied by a prepared accusation.
Theft of a two-million-dollar watch.
A signed confession.
And a proposed settlement.
If I admitted stealing the watch, Dominic would supposedly agree not to pursue criminal charges.
In exchange, I would surrender my trust rights.
My stomach turned.
"That's why he hit me."
Rebecca hesitated.
"The evidence suggests the confrontation was planned to pressure you. His decision to assault you remains his responsibility."
I nodded.
That distinction mattered.
Nobody had forced Dominic to strike me.
He chose to.
Then I remembered Adrian's voice on the phone.
You struck the only woman I ever asked to marry me.
For years, I'd carried that proposal like a wound.
Now it had unexpectedly saved me from another trap.
But Adrian wasn't the solution to everything.
I knew that.
I needed independent legal representation.
Evidence.
And the freedom to decide what happened next.
So I began cooperating with investigators.
I gave a detailed statement about the assault.
Provided photographs of my injuries.
Turned over the threatening messages Conrad sent seven years earlier.
And explained why I'd disappeared.
For the first time, I wasn't hiding my story.
I was telling it.
Then Vanessa's attorney contacted Rebecca.
Vanessa wanted to provide additional information.
She claimed Dominic had been working with Conrad to transfer protected assets into companies controlled by the Rainer family.
Some transactions dated back years.
Others were recent.
One occurred the morning of the Marlowe Club incident.
I stared at the amount.
Forty-two million dollars.
The transfer had been authorized using a document bearing my signature.
I looked closer.
The signature wasn't mine.
And the transaction had been completed before Dominic accused me of stealing his watch.
Someone had already stolen the money.
The public humiliation was supposed to stop me from discovering it.
Then Rebecca received a call from the financial investigators.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
She listened.
Then looked at me.
"Claire, there's something else."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"The original Cross-Bennett trust has been located."
I stopped breathing.
Rebecca continued.
"The documents identify Evelyn Cross and Rose Bennett as its founders."
I nodded.
Then she revealed the final secret.
"The trust was never supposed to be controlled by Adrian's father or Conrad Vale."
My heart pounded.
"Then who controlled it?"
Rebecca looked directly at me.
"Your mother."
"And after her death?"
May you like
She swallowed.
"You."
