Chapter 13 - THE SECRET HIDDEN INSIDE TWO MILLION DOLLARS

The watch had been a hiding place.
That was why Dominic Rainer claimed it was worth two million dollars.
Not because of the platinum.
Not because it belonged to his mother.
But because someone had hidden a tiny storage device beneath its back plate.
For twenty years, the original Silver Rose records had been sitting inside a watch passed between powerful families.
And someone had been desperate to recover them.
I stood beside Rebecca while a forensic specialist examined the watch.
The compartment was narrow.
Almost invisible.
Inside was a miniature storage device.
Its files had been preserved in an old encrypted format.
The specialist worked carefully.
Then the first document appeared.
THE SILVER ROSE FOUNDATION — ORIGINAL TRUST AGREEMENT.
My hands began trembling.
Evelyn Cross.
Rose Bennett.
Two women who'd spent years trying to create safety for people harmed by organized crime.
Then came the beneficiary register.
Hundreds of names.
Women.
Children.
Families.
People whose lives had been shaped by violence they never chose.
The records showed substantial assets assigned to medical care, housing, education, and emergency assistance.
But later financial statements concealed transfers into companies controlled by Conrad.
Dominic.
And several other insiders.
Adrian stared at the screen.
"My father was involved."
Rebecca nodded carefully.
"Some of the transfers began while he controlled the family's financial interests."
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the specialist opened another file.
A video.
Evelyn Cross appeared on the screen.
She was sitting beside Rose Bennett.
My mother.
Both women looked tired.
But determined.
Evelyn spoke first.
"If you're watching this, someone has tried to take the foundation away from the people it was built to serve."
Rose nodded.
"The money belongs to the families."
My eyes filled.
Mom's voice.
I'd almost forgotten how she sounded when she wasn't exhausted by illness.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
"Claire, if you ever see this, please know I never wanted you to carry our battles."
I covered my mouth.
She continued.
"I wanted you to have choices."
Tears streamed down my cheeks.
Evelyn reached for Rose's hand.
"And Adrian, I hope you learn that being powerful means nothing if you refuse to listen."
Adrian lowered his head.
The video continued.
Then Rose looked toward the camera again.
"If our children ever find one another, please don't let our mistakes become their prison."
I began sobbing.
For years, I'd believed my mother left me nothing but grief and overdue bills.
Now she was looking directly at me, reminding me that the money wasn't the point.
Freedom was.
The ability to choose a future without fear.
Then the final file opened.
A financial memo.
It listed several transfers made after Evelyn's death.
One company appeared repeatedly.
RAINER HOLDINGS.
Dominic's business.
And beneath the last transfer was a handwritten instruction.
The original records must never reach Claire Bennett.
The authorizing name was Conrad Vale.
But beside it appeared another signature.
Warren Pike.
Dominic's security chief.
The man who ordered my purse searched.
The man who stood beside Dominic when he struck me.
And the man who had controlled the Marlowe Club's security cameras.
May you like
He hadn't simply been following orders.
He'd been protecting the secret inside the watch.
