Chapter 4 - THE DEAD MAN WHO WALKED THROUGH THE CLUB

Conrad Vale had been dead for seven years.
At least, that's what the newspapers said.
His car went off a bridge in upstate New York.
The vehicle was recovered.
The body was never found.
Adrian spent months investigating because Conrad had once served as his father's closest financial adviser.
Then the trail went cold.
I remembered the funeral.
I also remembered leaving Adrian's penthouse before sunrise the following morning.
For seven years, I'd carried the memory of Conrad's final threat.
Leave Adrian.
Disappear.
Or everyone you love will suffer.
Now he was alive.
And he'd been standing beside Vanessa Rainer while she apparently hid her husband's watch.
I sat inside a private medical office while a nurse examined my cheek.
The doctor confirmed bruising and a small cut inside my lip.
He recommended appropriate treatment and documented the injury.
Adrian waited outside.
He didn't insist on coming in.
For once, I was grateful.
Afterward, I found him standing near the window.
His hands were folded behind his back.
He looked like a man trying very hard not to let anger make another decision for him.
"How are you?" he asked.
"Sore."
His expression tightened.
"I'm sorry."
I studied him.
"You're not the one who hit me."
"No."
He paused.
"But someone threatened you years ago, and I never understood why you disappeared."
I looked away.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he asked the question I'd dreaded for seven years.
"Why did you leave?"
My throat tightened.
"Because Conrad threatened my mother."
Adrian went completely still.
"What?"
"He told me that if I stayed with you, she'd die."
His face hardened.
"And you believed him?"
I looked directly at him.
"He showed me photographs of her leaving the hospital. Her apartment. The grocery store. Places nobody outside our family should've known."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Claire..."
"He said you'd never believe me because Conrad was part of your family business."
Silence.
Then Adrian whispered:
"I would've believed you."
Tears filled my eyes.
"Maybe."
That single word hurt us both.
Because the truth was, I hadn't trusted Adrian enough to tell him.
And he'd built a world where men like Conrad could threaten people without consequences.
After a while, Adrian reached toward my hand.
Then stopped.
"May I?"
I nodded.
His fingers closed gently around mine.
For one terrible second, I was twenty-one again.
Barefoot in his penthouse.
Believing love could somehow exist safely beside an empire built on fear.
Then I remembered why I'd left.
I pulled away.
"I can't do this yet."
Adrian nodded immediately.
"All right."
That surprised me.
The old Adrian would've demanded an explanation.
This one simply listened.
Then his attorney, Rebecca Sloan, entered carrying a folder.
"We found something in Conrad's old records."
Adrian looked up.
"What?"
"A transfer agreement dated seven years ago."
Rebecca placed it on the table.
The document listed several offshore companies.
A trust.
And a beneficiary.
I leaned forward.
My stomach dropped.
The beneficiary's name was:
CLAIRE BENNETT.
I stared.
"Why am I named in a trust?"
Rebecca hesitated.
"Because according to these records, Rose Bennett held a financial interest in a company originally controlled by Evelyn Cross."
My heart pounded.
"And?"
Rebecca turned the page.
The trust had been worth nearly ninety million dollars.
May you like
And someone had used my forged signature to transfer the entire amount into Conrad Vale's companies.
The date was the morning I disappeared from Adrian's life.
