Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER WHO DIED FOR THE SILVER ROSE

Evelyn Cross had been dead for almost twenty years.

For most of Adrian's life, he believed cancer had taken her.

Now Conrad Vale was claiming something else.

I sat beside Adrian while Rebecca explained the new information.

Conrad's statement wasn't enough to establish what happened.

Investigators would need records.

Witnesses.

Medical evidence.

And independent verification.

But the claim reopened questions nobody in the Cross family had dared ask.

Adrian looked toward the window.

"My father told me she was sick."

Rebecca nodded.

"Her medical records do document illness."

"Then how could Conrad claim she was murdered?"

"He's alleging that someone interfered with her treatment."

My stomach tightened.

I thought about my mother's final years.

The doctors.

The medications.

The hospital rooms.

How easy it was for someone outside the system to feel powerless.

Then Rebecca showed us an old letter.

Evelyn had written it to Rose Bennett.

My mother.

The handwriting was elegant.

Careful.

Almost fragile.

Rose,

I have discovered that the trust's accounts are being changed without our approval.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Rebecca continued.

Conrad says the transfers are temporary, but I don't believe him.

A pause.

If anything happens to me, please protect the original records.

I covered my mouth.

Evelyn knew.

She'd suspected the fraud before she died.

Then came the final paragraph.

I don't want Adrian raised to believe love is another form of control.

My throat tightened.

The words felt painfully familiar.

Seven years earlier, I'd left Adrian because I feared the world surrounding him.

Now I was discovering his mother had feared that same world.

Adrian reached for the letter.

His hands trembled.

"My mother wrote this."

I nodded.

He read the last sentence again.

Then whispered:

"She wanted better for me."

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Adrian looked toward Rebecca.

"I'll provide whatever records are needed."

She nodded.

"And I'll cooperate with the investigation into my father's businesses."

For the first time, the feared mafia boss of New York wasn't trying to protect his family's reputation.

He was trying to uncover the truth.

The investigation into Evelyn's death expanded.

Former medical staff were interviewed.

Old prescriptions and payment records were reviewed.

Financial transfers connected to Conrad and Adrian's father came under scrutiny.

Some records had been destroyed.

Others were incomplete.

But investigators found evidence that justified a formal review of the circumstances surrounding her final treatment.

Meanwhile, the Silver Rose Foundation's original records were authenticated.

The forged transfer documents were challenged.

And the assets diverted through Conrad and Dominic's companies became the subject of civil and criminal proceedings.

Then Rebecca received another document.

A sealed letter from Evelyn's private archive.

Addressed to Adrian.

He opened it slowly.

My darling son,

If you're reading this, the truth has finally found you.

His eyes filled.

The letter continued.

I hope you become a man who understands that protecting someone doesn't mean controlling them.

Adrian began crying.

Then came the sentence that broke him.

If you ever meet Rose's daughter Claire, remember that she deserves a life free from the fear our families created.

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Evelyn Cross had known about me before Adrian and I ever met.

And she'd left him a warning about the girl he would someday ask to marry.
