Chapter 6 - The Unopened Letter

By three o'clock in the morning, Chloe had been transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, surrounded by three warming blankets and a continuous vital monitor.
Her core temperature had slowly climbed back to ninety-four degrees, and her pale cheeks were showing the faint, beautiful return of natural pink color.
I sat in the armchair beside her bed, holding her small, warm hand against my cheek, listening to the steady, life-giving hum of the ventilator.
Detective Mark Ramos quietly pushed the door open, carrying a sealed plastic evidence bag containing the muddy, waterlogged backpack we had retrieved from Beatrice’s foyer.
"Rachel, the district attorney wants to know everything before we draft the formal child abuse indictments," Mark said softly, pulling up a chair.
"When we processed the backpack for evidence, we found something concealed inside the internal lining of her school agenda."
Mark opened the evidence bag with gloved hands, pulling out a thick, laminated envelope that had survived the rainstorm.
The envelope was addressed to Rachel Hayes, stamped with the official seal of the United States Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps.
My brow furrowed in utter confusion as I took the document with trembling fingers.
"Why would Chloe have a military legal document hidden in her backpack?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Look at the postmark date, Rachel," Mark pointed to the faded purple ink in the upper right corner.
The date read: October 14th, 2018—the exact month Chloe’s father, Navy Lieutenant David Hayes, had supposedly abandoned us to marry another woman in San Diego.
I broke the wax seal, unfolding the thick parchment inside as my heart began to pound with a sickening sense of foreboding.
The letter was not from a lawyer demanding a divorce; it was a military service affidavit written in David’s bold, familiar handwriting:
*"My dearest Rachel, if you are reading this, your mother Beatrice has finally allowed my letters through.
I never abandoned you and Chloe.
When I was deployed to the Persian Gulf, Beatrice contacted my commanding officer with signed legal affidavits claiming you had filed for an emergency annulment and full custody termination."*
*"She told me you wanted me out of your lives forever and threatened to destroy my naval career if I ever contacted you again.
Every single month for the past five years, I have deposited two thousand dollars into a private trust fund for Chloe’s care, administered through Beatrice as the designated trustee."*
*"I am currently stationed as Chief Medical Officer at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
I have never stopped looking for you.
I love you both with every breath in my body."*

The room spun around me as the horrific truth shattered fourteen years of calculated deception.
David had never left us; my mother had systematically engineered our separation to harvest his military child support while making me believe I was entirely alone in the world.
