Chapter 13 - Chloe's First Words

Back in the quiet sanctuary of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the gentle afternoon sun began to warm the glass windows.
The pediatric pulmonologist and Dr.
Vance stood by the bedside, carefully weaning Chloe from the mechanical ventilator as her spontaneous respiratory drive returned to full strength.
With a soft, practiced motion, the doctor removed the endotracheal tube from her airway.
Chloe let out a small, raspy cough, her long brown eyelashes fluttering against her pale cheeks as her hazel eyes slowly opened for the first time in thirty-six hours.
"Mommy..." Chloe croaked, her voice weak, fragile, but sounding like the sweetest symphony in the universe.
I leaped from my chair, taking her small hand in mine, kissing her knuckles as tears of overwhelming joy washed down my face.
"I’m right here, my brave baby girl," I wept softly.
"Mommy is right here, and you are completely safe."
Chloe’s eyes flickered across the room, landing upon the tall man standing beside the bed in his Navy dress uniform, his eyes brimming with tears.
She looked at his face, studying the sharp jawline, the dark hair, and the hazel eyes that mirrored her own so perfectly.
"Are you...
the daddy from the picture in Mommy's drawer?" Chloe whispered, her tiny fingers reaching out weakly toward his gold uniform buttons.
David dropped to his knees beside the bed, his broad shoulders shaking with quiet, beautiful sobs as he took her tiny hand into his large palm.
"Yes, my sweet Chloe," David choked out, his voice thick with unyielding love.
"I’m your daddy.
I’ve been looking for you for so long, and I promise you on my life, I will never leave your side again."
Chloe smiled—a radiant, beautiful smile that lit up the entire hospital room—and rested her head against his hand.
"Grandma told me you didn't want me because I was bad," Chloe whispered into his palm.
"Grandma was an evil liar, sweetheart," David said firmly, kissing her forehead.
