Chapter 14 - Judgment at the Bench

Six months later, Courtroom 5B of the United States District Court in Dallas was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, medical staff, and community members.
Beatrice Vance and Lauren Vance sat at the defense table, dressed in matching dark blue institutional jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound by heavy transport chains.
Beatrice looked ancient and broken, her silver hair unkempt, her sallow face hollowed by six months in federal isolation.
Lauren sat with her head buried in her hands, trembling uncontrollably as Chief District Judge Evelyn Brooks reviewed the sentencing memoranda.
"Will the defendants please rise for sentencing," the bailiff announced, his voice echoing through the vaulted chamber.
Beatrice struggled to stand, her knees buckling until two armed federal marshals held her upright by the elbows.
"Beatrice Vance, you have demonstrated a level of calculated sociopathy and moral bankruptcy that shocks the conscience of this court," Judge Brooks declared, her voice resounding like thunder.
"You weaponized the freezing elements to execute a slow, agonizing death upon your own innocent eight-year-old granddaughter for monetary gain."
"On the counts of attempted capital murder of a minor, wire fraud, military benefits theft, and aggravated child torture, this court sentences you to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the Federal Medical Center Carswell."
Beatrice let out a dry, choking shriek, collapsing onto the defense table as the reality of dying inside a federal penitentiary sealed her fate forever.
"Lauren Vance, for your active complicity in the concealment of a life-threatening felony and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, you are sentenced to twenty-two years in federal prison."
"Furthermore, under the Federal Mandatory Victims Restitution Act, all assets seized from the Vance estate—totaling two point four million dollars—are hereby transferred into the sole ownership of Rachel and Chloe Hayes."
BANG!
The crack of the heavy wooden gavel echoed like the closing of a reinforced iron vault.

The marshals dragged the weeping felons through the heavy steel holding doors, their chains clanking with a cold, final ring against the polished marble floor.
Justice had arrived, absolute, merciless, and complete.
