Chapter 10 - The Raid on Willow Ridge

At 6:30 in the morning, six tactical law enforcement vehicles swarmed the circular driveway of Beatrice Vance’s suburban estate on Willow Ridge Road.

Armed SWAT operators in body armor took up perimeter positions along the cedar fence line while NCIS special agents breached the front entryway with a hydraulic ram.

BANG!

The heavy oak door shattered off its hinges, crashing onto the marble foyer floor with a deafening roar.

"Federal agents! Search warrant! Everyone get on the ground!" barked Agent Jenkins as tactical teams flooded the interior.

Lauren screamed hysterically from the kitchen, dropping a carton of orange juice onto the tile floor as two female deputies forced her face-down onto the ground.

Beatrice emerged from the master bedroom suite in a silk morning robe, her face contorted in arrogant outrage.

"What is the meaning of this barbarism?" Beatrice shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at the tactical officers.

"I am a pillar of this community! My late husband was a city councilman!"

"Beatrice Vance, shut your mouth and place your hands behind your back!" Agent Jenkins commanded, stepping forward with drawn sidearm.

"You are being detained under a federal warrant for military benefits fraud, grand larceny, and attempted capital murder!"

Hunter and Paige were gently escorted to a waiting Child Protective Services vehicle in the driveway, crying in confusion as their mother was handcuffed.

Inside the master bedroom, federal forensic technicians used an angle grinder to breach a floor safe hidden beneath Beatrice’s walk-in wardrobe.

Inside the steel vault, investigators uncovered over ninety thousand dollars in uncashed military cashier checks, seven forged power-of-attorney documents, and three unregistered burner cell phones.

On the dining room table, sitting beside Beatrice’s half-eaten breakfast, was the printed insurance claim form for Chloe’s accidental death policy, pre-dated for the upcoming Monday.

"She didn't even wait for the child's funeral to draft the claim," a forensic detective remarked, bagging the document in transparent evidence plastic.

Beatrice thrash against the handcuffs as she was hauled down her own front steps into the glaring lights of five local news broadcast vans that had already arrived on the scene.

Her reign of terror, built on stolen money and calculated cruelty, was being dismantled before the entire city of Dallas.
