Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE THAT SAVED THEM BOTH

Thomas Hayes dropped the gun when federal agents surrounded the warehouse.

Nathan was alive, wounded in the shoulder, and quickly taken into custody.

The ledger lay open on the concrete floor.

And behind a locked office door, Lily began calling for her mother.

Claire ran to her.

Lily launched herself into Claire's arms, sobbing.

"Mommy!"

Claire held her so tightly that she could barely breathe.

"I'm here, baby. I'm right here."

Vincent stood in the doorway, his face pale.

Lily reached for him.

"Daddy!"

He knelt and wrapped both arms around his daughter.

For several minutes, the three of them remained together.

No empire.

No enemies.

No divorce papers.

Just a family that had nearly lost everything.

But the night wasn't over.

Thomas was questioned separately.

He admitted that Elizabeth had never ordered Anthony's murder. She had given Richard false information to protect Claire, believing it would send Anthony down a safer route.

Richard changed the plan.

Anthony died anyway.

Thomas had hidden the truth because he believed the Moretti family would retaliate against Claire if they learned Elizabeth had been involved.

He had spent years protecting her from a danger that no longer existed, while allowing the people responsible to remain free.

Dana secured the ledger and confirmed that the financial records matched the original trust documents.

The evidence implicated Richard Vale, Nathan, several former Moretti executives, and officials who had accepted bribes.

But it also proved that Vincent had not participated in the original crimes.

He cooperated with investigators and agreed to surrender control of the illegal operations still connected to his companies.

It would cost him billions.

He did it anyway.

Weeks later, Claire sat in a quiet courtroom as Nathan entered a guilty plea to kidnapping, extortion, and multiple financial crimes.

Richard Vale was arrested overseas after investigators traced the assets he had hidden.

The case against him included Elizabeth's murder, Anthony's death, and decades of fraud.

Michael testified.

Margaret Ellis testified.

And finally, Isabella Moretti testified about the false records used to conceal the truth.

The old empire began to collapse.

Vincent lost associates who had once called him untouchable.

He also lost the protection that money and fear had provided.

But every night, he went to Claire's townhouse to read Lily a bedtime story.

He never asked Claire to return to him.

He never used their daughter to negotiate.

And he never complained when Claire needed time alone.

One evening, she found him sitting on the porch after Lily had fallen asleep.

"I heard you sold the casino," she said.

"Most of it."

"And the shipping company?"

"I'm restructuring it legally."

She sat beside him.

"You're giving up everything."

Vincent looked at her.

"No. I'm giving up the things that were never worth what they cost."

Claire studied his face.

For the first time in months, she saw the man she'd fallen in love with—not the feared boss, but the man who once danced with her in the kitchen while dinner burned.

"I miss that man," she whispered.

Vincent's eyes filled.

"So do I."

She took his hand.

Then her phone rang.

Dana Brooks.

"Claire, we've identified the person who originally sent the message about your mother's death."

Claire straightened.

"Who?"

Dana paused.

"Your mother didn't send the message, and neither did Richard."

"Then who did?"

Dana's answer was almost a whisper.

"The person who signed your divorce settlement as an independent witness."

May you like

Claire stared at Vincent.

The final betrayal had come from someone who had been standing beside them from the beginning.
