Chapter 13 - THE CONFESSION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Claire refused to believe Nathan Vale.
Her mother had been loving, gentle, and fiercely protective.
She had spent years making sacrifices so Claire could have a better life.
The idea that Elizabeth had ordered Anthony Moretti's death felt impossible.
But Michael's expression told her he had heard the accusation before.
"Is it true?" Claire asked him.
Michael sat down heavily.
"Your mother helped uncover Richard's crimes. She knew Anthony was planning to expose him. But the night Anthony died, she received a message claiming Richard had kidnapped you."
Claire felt sick.
"I was a child."
"Yes. She was told that if Anthony survived, Richard would kill you both."
"Did she do something?"
Michael looked away.
"She gave Richard the route Anthony would take home that night."
Vincent closed his eyes.
The room fell silent.
Michael continued.
"She believed Richard would frighten him into abandoning the investigation. She never intended for Anthony to die."
Claire stared at him.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"Because she spent the rest of her life trying to make sure you never knew what she'd done."
Claire couldn't speak.
She thought of the bedtime stories.
The warm kitchen.
Her mother's hands brushing her hair away from her face.
Love and guilt had existed together in the same woman.
For the first time, Claire understood that the past wasn't divided neatly between heroes and villains.
Some people made terrible choices while trying to save the people they loved.
Others used those choices to justify years of cruelty.
Vincent reached for her hand.
She let him hold it.
"We'll find Lily," he said.
Claire looked at him.
"And after that?"
He didn't offer a grand promise.
"After that, you decide what happens next."
They went to the warehouse with federal agents positioned nearby.
Nathan stood beneath a broken overhead light.
He held the original ledger in one hand.
In the other was a small remote.
"Where's Lily?" Claire demanded.
Nathan pointed toward an adjoining office.
"Inside. She's safe."
Vincent moved forward.
Nathan raised the remote.
"One more step, and the evidence disappears."
Dana ordered everyone to hold position.
Nathan smiled.
"Your families destroyed mine. Richard spent his life running from people who wanted him imprisoned. Anthony stole the evidence. Michael disappeared. And Elizabeth tried to fix everything by sacrificing the wrong man."
Claire stepped closer.
"You kidnapped my daughter to punish people who made decisions decades before she was born."
"I kidnapped her because the truth is valuable."
"No," Claire replied. "You kidnapped her because you thought fear made you powerful."
For a moment, Nathan's expression changed.
Then he tossed the ledger onto the floor.
"Take it."
Vincent moved toward it.
A gunshot shattered the air.
Nathan fell.
A second man emerged from the shadows.
He wore a dark coat and held a smoking pistol.
Claire recognized him from the photograph outside her townhouse.
Thomas Hayes.
Her supposed grandfather.
He looked at Claire and whispered, "I'm sorry, sweetheart."

Then he turned toward Vincent.
"I didn't come here to kill Nathan. I came to make sure your wife never learns who really killed her mother."
