Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO STOPPED WAITING

Three days after Claire Moretti left her husband, Chicago's most feared Mafia boss discovered that the woman he had dismissed as boring had disappeared from every corner of his life.
Vincent stood in the empty master bedroom, staring at the pale rectangle on the wall where their wedding photograph had hung.
He had expected tears. Angry phone calls. Perhaps a lawyer demanding more money.
He hadn't expected silence.
"Find out where she went," he ordered.
Leo Bennett, his longtime security chief, shifted uneasily. "Mrs. Moretti rented a townhouse in Lincoln Park. She took Lily and her personal belongings."
"Mrs. Moretti?"
Leo paused. "Claire hasn't changed her name on anything yet, boss."
Vincent looked toward the window.
"Then why does it feel like she's already gone?"
Leo didn't answer.
For five years, Vincent had believed Claire's love was the one thing in his life he never needed to protect. She had forgiven his late nights, his canceled anniversaries, and the dangerous men who occasionally appeared at their dinner table.
He had mistaken her patience for permanence.
That evening, he visited the townhouse without calling.
Claire opened the door wearing jeans and an old sweater. Behind her, Lily was painting a cardboard castle pink.
"Daddy!" the little girl squealed.
Vincent lifted her into his arms, inhaling the familiar scent of strawberry shampoo.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Then Lily asked, "Daddy, are you coming home when Mommy says I can?"
Vincent froze.
Claire gently took their daughter back.
"Sweetheart, why don't you finish your castle?"
When Lily disappeared into the kitchen, Vincent lowered his voice.
"We need to talk."
"We already did."
"You can't seriously expect us to raise Lily separately forever."
"I'm not asking you to disappear from her life."
"Then come home."
Claire stared at him.
"You asked me for a divorce, Vincent."
"I thought you'd fight for us."
"Why? So you could feel wanted without having to want me back?"
His jaw tightened.
Before he could answer, a black SUV pulled up outside.
Leo hurried through the gate, his face pale.
"Boss, we've got a problem."
Vincent stepped outside.
"What?"
Leo handed him a photograph taken from a security camera.
It showed Claire entering a downtown office building that morning.
