Chapter 12 - THE FATHER WHO CHOSE THE WRONG SIDE

Claire had imagined meeting her father a thousand times.
She had pictured a gentle man with her mother's eyes, someone who would explain why he had disappeared and apologize for missing every birthday.
She had never imagined learning that he might have helped a criminal escape justice.
Dana moved Isabella to a secure location before the facility lost power completely.
Vincent arrived shortly afterward.
He didn't argue when Claire insisted on returning to the federal office.
Instead, he sat beside her in the car and waited for her to speak.
"Your father may have been involved," she said.
Vincent nodded.
"So might mine."
Claire looked at him.
"How do we know who to trust?"
"We don't. We verify everything."
It was the first answer he had given her in years that didn't sound like a promise designed to end a conversation.
At the office, Dana found a record linking Michael Hayes to a federal witness protection program.
His identity had been changed after the warehouse fire.
He had testified against several members of Richard Vale's organization, then disappeared before the case went to trial.
A new name had been assigned to him.
Michael Reed.
The address led to a small house outside Madison, Wisconsin.
Claire insisted on going.
Vincent accompanied her, but stayed behind when she approached the front door.
An older man opened it.
His hair was silver.
His shoulders were bent.
But his eyes were unmistakably familiar.
Claire covered her mouth.
"Michael?"
The man stared at her.
Then tears filled his eyes.
"Claire."
She stood frozen.
"You're my father?"
He nodded.
"I should have found you years ago."
"Why didn't you?"
Michael lowered his head.
"Because the people who killed your mother were still watching you. I believed staying away was the only way to keep you safe."
Claire's voice shook.
"Did you help Richard Vale escape?"
Michael looked stricken.
"No. I helped build the case against him. But someone inside the investigation leaked our evidence, and Richard disappeared before the arrest."
"Who leaked it?"
Michael looked through the doorway toward Vincent.
Then he whispered a name.
"Anthony Moretti."
Vincent went still.
Michael explained that Anthony had secretly redirected the original shipping records to protect his son from Richard's retaliation.
But the decision had destroyed the prosecution and allowed Richard to continue operating.
"He believed he was saving Vincent," Michael said. "Instead, he gave Richard years to build a bigger criminal network."
Claire looked toward her husband.
Vincent's expression was unreadable.
"My father helped the man who killed your mother," he said quietly.
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
The truth settled over them.
No one was innocent.
But some people had spent their lives trying to repair the damage, while others had profited from it.
Dana's phone rang.
She listened, then turned pale.
Nathan Vale had contacted the authorities.
He offered to surrender the original ledger and release Lily in exchange for immunity.
Claire grabbed the phone.
"Put him through."
Nathan's voice came through calmly.
"Mrs. Moretti. I believe it's time we discussed your daughter."
"Where is Lily?"
"Safe."
"Prove it."
A video appeared.
Lily was sitting beside a window, holding her pink rabbit.
She looked tired but unharmed.
Claire pressed a hand over her mouth.
Nathan continued.
"Bring the key to the old warehouse tonight."
"Why?"
"Because the account isn't the only thing your mother left behind."
He paused.
"She left a confession."
May you like
Then he said something that made Vincent's face turn white.
"Your mother was the one who ordered Anthony Moretti's death."
