Chapter 8 - THE SECRET CLAIRE HID

The police had taken Thomas away.

The mansion was finally quiet.

But no one slept.

Claire sat with Sophie in the old library.

Adrian stood near the window.

Ethan was examining the photograph.

Elena entered.

“I know who she is.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian stared.

“Who?”

Elena looked at the photograph.

“Your grandmother.”

Adrian froze.

“My grandmother died before I was born.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“Your father told everyone she died.”

Claire looked shocked.

“Why?”

“Because she knew about the original Whitmore trust.”

Adrian stared.

“Then where is she?”

Elena hesitated.

“She has been living under another name.”

“Where?”

“An assisted-living facility outside Boston.”

Adrian felt overwhelmed.

Another lie.

Another fake death.

Another family secret.

Claire touched his arm.

“Don't go alone.”

They drove there the next morning.

The woman waiting inside the room was ninety years old.

She looked at Adrian.

And immediately began crying.

“My boy.”

Adrian stopped.

He had never heard those words from her.

She reached for his hand.

“Thomas told me you hated me.”

“I didn't know you were alive.”

“I know.”

She looked at Claire.

“And you.”

Claire sat beside her.

The elderly woman smiled.

“I prayed you'd survive.”

Adrian frowned.

“You knew Claire?”

“She came to me before she disappeared.”

Claire nodded.

“I needed help.”

The woman reached into a drawer.

She removed an old envelope.

“Thomas wanted Sophie because of the trust.”

Adrian nodded.

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don't.”

She handed him the envelope.

Inside was the original trust document.

Adrian read it.

His face went pale.

The clause was different from what Thomas had claimed.

The Whitmore fortune did not belong to Sophie.

It belonged to the children of Claire.

Both of them.

Adrian looked at Ethan.

“And if they refuse?”

The woman smiled.

“Then the trust dissolves.”

Adrian stared.

“Every company?”

“Every company.”

Claire whispered:

“That was why Thomas hid Ethan.”

“And Sophie.”

The elderly woman nodded.

“He needed both children controlled.”

Adrian suddenly realized why the mansion had always felt like a prison.

Thomas hadn't been protecting wealth.

He had been protecting a dynasty.

The woman looked at Adrian.

“Your father wasn't the only person involved.”

Adrian frowned.

“Who else?”

She looked toward Claire.

“Your mother's family.”

Claire's face changed.

“My mother?”

“She signed the original agreement.”

Adrian's heart sank.

“Why?”

“To protect the children.”

Claire looked confused.

“What children?”

The elderly woman pointed toward Ethan.

Then Sophie.

“Those two.”

Silence.

Then Sophie asked:

“Does that mean Ethan is my brother?”

Everyone froze.

Adrian looked at Claire.

Claire nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Sophie smiled.

“I have a brother.”

Ethan laughed through tears.

“You do.”

Sophie hugged him.

Adrian watched them.

For the first time, the Whitmore family wasn't defined by money.

It was defined by the people Thomas had tried to erase.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“You think Thomas was the mastermind?”

Adrian's blood froze.

“Who is this?”

The voice laughed.

“Ask Claire why she never told you about the night she left the hospital.”

The call ended.

Claire's face went pale.

Adrian looked at her.

“What aren't you telling me?”

Claire couldn't answer.

Then Sophie walked toward her mother.

“Mom?”

Claire knelt.

“Yes?”

“Did someone hurt you?”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Claire looked at Adrian.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Someone we trusted.”
