Chapter 5 - THE CHILD THEY ERASED

Adrian stared at Elena.
“What are you saying?”
Elena looked at Sophie.
“Claire's first child was born two years before Sophie.”
Adrian shook his head.
“That isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“Who was the father?”
Elena didn't answer.
Adrian's face went pale.
“Was it me?”
Elena nodded.
Adrian sat down.
He had no memory of another child.
None.
Not even a photograph.
“How?”
“Your father took the baby.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed the child had a legal claim to the Whitmore fortune.”
Adrian's breathing became shallow.
“What happened?”
Elena looked toward the mansion's east wing.
“The baby was declared dead.”
Adrian stood.
“Where is the child now?”
Elena whispered:
“You've seen him.”
Adrian's mind raced through every person in the house.
The staff.
Security.
The household manager.
Then one name came to him.
Ethan.
His twenty-two-year-old assistant.
Ethan had been working for him for three years.
Quiet.
Loyal.
Almost invisible.
Adrian whispered:
“No.”
Elena nodded.
“Ethan is Claire's son.”
Adrian's world collapsed.
Ethan.
The young man he had treated like an employee.
The young man who had always seemed strangely familiar.
The eyes.
The smile.
The way he held his head.
Adrian suddenly understood why.
“Where is he?”
Before Elena could answer, footsteps echoed outside.
Ethan entered.
He looked at Adrian.
Then at Elena.
“You finally told him.”
Adrian stared.
“You knew?”
Ethan nodded.
“I've known since I was sixteen.”
“Who told you?”
“Claire.”
Adrian's voice broke.
“She raised you?”
“No.”
Ethan looked down.
“She found me after I ran away from the people who had me.”
“Who had you?”
“Your father.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
His father had stolen his son.
Then raised him under another identity.
The betrayal was almost impossible to comprehend.
Ethan stepped forward.
“I didn't come here for money.”
“Then why?”
“To protect Sophie.”
Adrian looked at him.
“From Vanessa?”
“From everyone.”
Ethan handed him a folder.
Inside were financial records.
Police reports.
Medical records.
And a photograph.
Adrian stared.
It showed Thomas Whitmore meeting Marcus Vale.
Beside them stood a third man.
Vanessa's father.
The three men had built the empire together.
Ethan spoke.
“They've been laundering money for decades.”
Adrian looked at the documents.
“Why didn't you expose them?”
“Because the evidence wasn't enough.”
“What changed?”
Ethan pointed toward Sophie.
“She was born with the last piece.”
Adrian frowned.
“What piece?”
“The original ledger.”
Adrian looked at Sophie.
She was holding the silver key.
Ethan continued.
“Claire hid the evidence inside something only Sophie could access.”
Adrian suddenly understood.
“The music room.”
Ethan nodded.
“But there's something else.”
He looked toward Vanessa.
“She knows where it is.”
Vanessa stood silently.
Then she smiled.
“You're all too late.”
The mansion doors slammed shut.
Security alarms activated.
Marcus's voice came over the intercom.
“No one leaves.”
Ethan grabbed Sophie.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Let them go.”
Marcus laughed.
“You still think you're in charge.”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
But this time, Adrian saw something behind her tears.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear of someone else.
Vanessa whispered:
“Thomas is alive.”
Adrian turned.
May you like
“What?”
“He's coming back tonight.”
