Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE NAME

The emergency generators came on.
Adrian immediately ordered security to lock down the mansion.
But Elena was already moving toward the staircase.
“Wait.”
Adrian followed her.
“Who was that?”
Elena kept walking.
“You heard him.”
“My father is dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then who was speaking?”
Elena stopped.
“Someone who knows what happened.”
They reached the second floor.
The hallway was empty.
Sophie held Elena's hand.
“Mommy said we had to find the blue box.”
Adrian looked at his daughter.
“What blue box?”
“The one Grandma hid.”
Adrian frowned.
“My mother?”
Sophie nodded.
“She said Grandma knew everything.”
Adrian's heart began pounding.
His mother had died six years ago.
But Claire had always been close to her.
Could his mother have known the truth?
Elena led them into an unused guest room.
She moved an antique painting.
Behind it was a small safe.
Adrian stared.
“That wasn't here before.”
“It was.”
Elena took out the silver key.
She inserted it.
The safe opened.
Inside was a blue metal box.
Adrian reached for it.
Elena stopped him.
“Claire wanted Sophie to open it.”
Sophie looked frightened.
“Me?”
“You're old enough now.”
Adrian didn't understand.
“Old enough for what?”
Elena looked at him.
“To know who her mother really was.”
Sophie opened the box.
Inside were letters.
Photographs.
A hospital bracelet.
And a birth certificate.
Adrian picked it up.
His hands shook.
The mother's name wasn't Vanessa.
It was Claire Bennett.
The father was Adrian Whitmore.
Sophie was his biological daughter.
He already knew that.
But beneath the certificate was another document.
A second birth record.
The mother's name had been changed.
Vanessa Whitmore.
Adrian stared.
“Why would Vanessa need to change this?”
Elena whispered:
“She didn't.”
“Then who did?”
“Your father.”
Adrian looked at her.
“My father hated Claire.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“He feared Claire.”
“Why?”
“Because she discovered where his money was really coming from.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“What are you saying?”
“Your family's fortune wasn't built legally.”
Adrian looked at the documents.
His father's company had been involved in private acquisitions, offshore accounts, shell corporations.
He had always assumed his father had made aggressive business decisions.
Elena pointed to one letter.
“Claire found evidence that your father had been laundering money through companies connected to Vanessa's family.”
Adrian's stomach dropped.
“Vanessa knew?”
“Yes.”
“And Claire threatened to expose them?”
“She didn't threaten anyone.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“She planned to go to the FBI.”
Adrian looked at the photograph of Claire.
“Then why did she disappear?”
Elena looked at Sophie.
“Because someone stopped her.”
Sophie whispered:
“Mommy said Daddy was there.”
Adrian froze.
“What?”
Elena didn't answer.
Adrian stared at his daughter.
“Did Claire say I hurt her?”
Sophie shook her head.
“She said you didn't know.”
Adrian's heart broke.
“Didn't know what?”
Sophie reached into the box.
She pulled out a final letter.
The envelope was addressed:
ADRIAN — IF I DON'T COME BACK.
He opened it.
Only one sentence had been written.
I FORGIVE YOU FOR WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO DO, BECAUSE I KNOW THEY WILL MAKE YOU BELIEVE IT WAS YOUR CHOICE.
Adrian dropped the letter.
He suddenly remembered something.
A black car.
A phone call.
A glass of whiskey.
And Claire screaming his name.
But the memory vanished before he could grasp it.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
“You should stop digging.”
Adrian turned.
