Chapter 17 - DANIEL’S SENTENCE

In November, Daniel appeared before Judge Katherine Mercer for sentencing.

He pleaded guilty to misprision of a felony and financial concealment.

The courtroom was quiet.

Only Caleb and I attended from the family.

Mom remained at home, respecting our boundary that we did not want a dramatic family display inside the courthouse.

Judge Mercer reviewed Daniel’s probation reports before speaking.

“Mr. Vance,” Judge Mercer said sternly.

“You chose personal financial gain over the life of your sister.”

“You allowed a dangerous predator to operate inside your home because it served your ambitions.”

Daniel stood at the defense table, wearing a dark gray suit, his head bowed.

“I understand, Your Honor,” Daniel said quietly. “I do not ask for leniency.”

“I sentence you to three years in state custody, followed by five years of mandatory probation and full financial restitution of your university tuition fees.”

The gavel struck the block with a sharp CRACK.

Court marshals stepped forward, clicking steel handcuffs around Daniel’s wrists.

As he was led toward the side doors, he paused and looked toward the gallery.

He met my eyes.

He did not ask for a wave.

He did not mouth the words I’m sorry.

He simply accepted his sentence, turned away, and walked into the holding cell.

I took a slow breath, stood up from the wooden bench, and walked out into the crisp autumn air.

Justice had not restored our family.

Justice had simply drawn a line between cause and consequence.
