Chapter 14 - THE AUDIT AT THE CLINIC

Four months later, Dr. Sterling’s preliminary hearing convened at the county courthouse.

The courtroom was filled with former patients, journalists, and state investigators.

I sat in the second row of the gallery alongside Talia and Caleb.

Mom sat three rows behind us, sitting quietly with her hands folded in her lap.

When Dr. Sterling was led inside wearing a orange jumpsuit and wrist restraints, he looked around the room with a cold, detached arrogance.

He believed his medical title and high-society connections would protect him.

He was mistaken.

The prosecution called its primary witness: Daniel.

Daniel took the witness stand in a dark suit.

He swore the oath with a trembling hand.

For four hours, Daniel detailed how Ray and Dr. Sterling had operated.

He described how Ray would bring home experimental compounds under the guise of ‘herbal supplements.’

He described how Ray kept a locked cabinet in the garage containing unlabeled glass vials.

He described the night of my collapse.

“Ray made the casserole,” Daniel testified, his voice echoing across the silent courtroom.

“He told me to make sure my sister ate it. He said she was being dramatic about her health and needed to learn a lesson.”

The lead prosecutor stepped closer to the stand.

“Did you see him add anything to her plate?”

“I saw him sprinkle dried powder over her portion before serving it,” Daniel confessed, tears finally streaming down his face.

“Did you stop her from eating it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I was afraid if I made a scene, Ray would cut off my tuition payments.”

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the gallery.

Mom covered her face with her hands, weeping silently in the back row.

I sat completely still in my seat.

The truth was no longer hidden behind kitchen arguments or closed doors.

It was recorded in court transcripts.

It was stamped into public record.

The dark story had finally reached its end.
