Chapter 15 - THE TESTIMONY OF LISA

On the fifth day of the hearing, the prosecution called Lisa to the stand.

My mother walked slowly to the witness box, her hair graying, her posture humble.

She did not look at Dr. Sterling.

She looked directly at the prosecutor.

“Mrs. Vance,” the prosecutor began gently. “During the five years you were married to Ray, did you ever suspect he was altering your daughter’s medical treatment?”

“I saw signs,” Mom answered, her voice clear despite her tears.

“What kind of signs?”

“My daughter collapsed twice before the final incident,” Mom confessed to the court.

“She told me her throat was burning. She told me she felt dizzy after eating.”

“And how did you respond?”

Mom took a slow, painful breath.

“I told her she was exaggerating.”

“I told her she was trying to ruin our family’s peace.”

“I protected my husband’s comfort because I was terrified of being alone again.”

The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless hush.

“Do you believe your daughter now, Mrs. Vance?”

Mom turned her head toward the gallery, locking her tear-filled blue eyes onto mine.

“I believe every word she ever spoke,” Mom said, her voice resonant and absolute.

“And I will spend the rest of my life ensuring no parent ever makes the same catastrophic mistake I made.”

I did not smile.

I did not cry.

I simply held her gaze and nodded once.
