Chapter 8 - THE SISTER WHO NEVER DIED

Claire Hale had been declared dead after a boating accident on Lake Michigan.

No body was recovered.

Vanessa had been twenty-four.

She believed it for twelve years.

Her father never corrected her.

Now we knew why.

Claire had disappeared voluntarily.

Not because she feared the Hale family.

Because she had joined Robert Kane.

They were lovers.

Partners.

Whatever word made betrayal sound less ugly.

Vanessa watched the elevator footage again.

“That’s her.”

Her voice cracked.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Find them.”

Daniel nodded.

I stepped between them.

“No violence.”

Everyone looked at me.

“I want my daughter back.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“So do I.”

“Then nobody turns this into revenge while Emma is in the middle.”

His eyes held mine.

Then:

“Agreed.”

No argument.

No macho promise.

Just agreed.

Claire called an hour later.

Video.

Emma sat beside her in what looked like an office.

Unhurt.

Confused.

Holding apple juice.

My knees nearly failed.

“Mommy?”

“I’m here, sweetheart.”

Claire turned the phone toward herself.

“You have very polite children.”

I wanted to reach through the screen.

“What do you want?”

“Adrian signs away the twins’ succession rights.”

Adrian stepped into frame.

“To whom?”

“Independent proxy.”

Caleb whispered:

“Kane.”

Claire smiled.

“Smart boy.”

The goal was simple.

Kane wanted control without appearing in the chain.

Adrian would sign temporary voting authority to a trust company Kane secretly controlled.

Then Ethan and Emma could remain alive because they would no longer matter.

I felt sick.

Adrian said:

“I’ll sign.”

“No,” I snapped.

He looked at me.

“Our daughter—”

“I know.”

Claire smiled.

“How touching. Divorced parents finally cooperating.”

I ignored her.

“We need proof Emma leaves with us before any transfer becomes valid.”

Claire laughed.

“You sound like a lawyer.”

“I’m a researcher. We understand conditions.”

For the first time, Claire’s smile weakened.

Good.

I needed time.

Caleb was tracing the video.

Daniel was comparing wall fixtures.

Vanessa stared at her sister’s background.

Then whispered:

“I know that room.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Our father’s old lake house.”

Claire heard.

Her face changed.

Too late.

The call ended.

Federal agents surrounded the property forty minutes later.

Adrian stayed outside.

So did I.

Longest forty minutes of my life.

Then the front door opened.

Emma ran out with an agent.

I broke.

I ran.

She hit me so hard I nearly fell.

“Mommy!”

“I’m here.”

Adrian stopped several feet away.

He did not touch her.

Did not claim her.

Emma looked over my shoulder.

Then held out one hand.

Adrian stared.

She whispered:

“You can come too.”

He crossed the distance.

The three of us held her.

Ethan joined seconds later.

For the first time, Adrian had both children in his arms.

His face broke completely.

Agents arrested Claire.

Kane was not there.

But they found his plan.

Documents showing he intended to kill Claire after the transfer.

She had never been his partner.

Only another disposable piece.

Vanessa looked through the cruiser window at the sister she had mourned for twelve years.

Then Claire said something through the open door.

“You still don’t know why Dad helped Kane.”

Vanessa froze.

Claire smiled bitterly.

“Ask Adrian what happened to Vanessa the night before your wedding.”

I looked at Adrian.

Then Vanessa.

Both faces changed.

May you like

There was another secret.

And this one had happened while I was still his wife.
