Chapter 2 - THE HEIRS NO ONE EXPECTED

Adrian moved us that night.

Not to his mansion.

I refused.

Instead, he placed us in a secure penthouse owned by one of his legitimate companies, then gave me every code, every exit route, and the names of every guard.

“I’m not your prisoner,” I told him.

“You’re not.”

“Then don’t lock the elevator without telling me.”

His face tightened.

“Fair.”

That one word surprised me.

The Adrian I had married had never been good at surrendering control.

Apparently six years had changed something.

Not enough.

But something.

After Ethan and Emma fell asleep, Adrian laid a thick leather folder on the table.

“The Mercer succession trust.”

I folded my arms.

“Explain.”

His grandfather, Patrick Mercer, had built the legitimate side of the family empire long before Adrian inherited the darker one.

Trucking.

Warehouses.

Freight terminals.

Commercial property.

Billions in voting control.

Patrick distrusted his sons, so he wrote one strange condition into the trust.

If Adrian ever had biological children, fifty-one percent of the voting shares would eventually pass into a protected line for them.

“And if you had no children?”

Adrian looked grim.

“Control passes to my uncle Malcolm’s branch.”

I remembered Malcolm Mercer.

Cold eyes.

Perfect suits.

The only person at our wedding who congratulated Adrian without ever looking at me.

“Who inherits through Malcolm?”

“His son.”

“Name?”

“Julian.”

I remembered him too.

A charming cousin who never seemed to work but somehow owned three houses.

“So Ethan and Emma’s existence takes control away from Julian.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough that he would never run Mercer Consolidated.”

I sat down.

“Would Julian know about the trust?”

“He signed documents related to it.”

My stomach turned.

“Then why didn’t he already know you might have children?”

“Because everyone believed I didn’t.”

I frowned.

Adrian hesitated.

Then said:

“Six years ago, after our divorce, I underwent medical testing.”

“Why?”

“There was an injury.”

I stared.

“What injury?”

He looked away.

“An attempt on my life.”

Of course.

He explained that doctors initially told him he was unlikely to father children.

The family trust classified him as having no expected biological heirs.

Julian became presumptive successor.

Until three days ago.

Until someone found Ethan and Emma’s records.

I looked toward the bedroom.

“They’re six-year-olds.”

“I know.”

“They don’t want a company.”

“I know.”

“They don’t even know you’re their father.”

Adrian’s expression broke.

“I know.”

That one hurt.

I lowered my voice.

“You don’t get to walk in and become Dad because blood tests say so.”

“I’m not asking for that.”

“Not yet.”

He absorbed it.

Then nodded.

Another surprise.

A knock sounded.

Daniel entered with a folder.

“We found the gray SUV.”

Adrian stood.

“Who owns it?”

“Shell company.”

“Connected to Julian?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Vanessa Hale.”

My chest went cold.

Adrian went completely still.

Six years disappeared again.

Vanessa.

The woman he had loved enough to end our marriage.

I laughed once.

Of course.

“Your enemies found the twins first?”

I looked at Adrian.

“Maybe your first love did.”

But Daniel shook his head.

“That’s not the strange part.”

He placed photographs on the table.

The gray SUV had not followed us from O’Hare to the city.

It had been waiting at O’Hare before our flight even landed.

May you like

And the person photographed getting into it that morning wasn’t Vanessa.

It was Adrian’s cousin Julian Mercer.
