Chapter 10 - THE WILL THAT MADE ME A TARGET

I had spent six years believing I had been discarded because Adrian loved someone else.
Now I learned his father had considered me dangerous enough to remove before children even existed.
It should have made me feel important.
It made me furious.
Malcolm explained.
Patrick Mercer did not trust the men in his family.
So he created checks.
Marriage.
Children.
Independent trustees.
Anything that prevented one ambitious relative from owning everything.
Richard hated it.
Malcolm hated it.
Kane loved their hatred.
He could manipulate anyone who feared losing control.
“Did Richard order the photographs in our bedroom?” Adrian asked.
Malcolm closed his eyes.
“He approved surveillance.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“No.”
“Did he order the death threat?”
“No.”
“Kane did.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped move the money.”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked ready to explode.
I touched his arm.
Not comfort.
Reminder.
The children were waiting outside.
He breathed.
Controlled it.
Malcolm watched us.
Then said:
“Richard regretted it.”
Adrian laughed.
“Convenient.”
“He discovered Evelyn was pregnant.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Adrian turned toward me.
“You said no one knew.”
“I didn’t.”
Malcolm continued.
“A Boston clinic sent an insurance claim through a Mercer-linked policy before Evelyn changed coverage.”
My hand went cold.
Richard had known.
Adrian’s father had known about my pregnancy.
And never told him.
“Why?”
Malcolm’s eyes filled.
“Because by then Richard was afraid Kane would kill them.”
For once, the silence felt like grief instead of suspicion.
Richard had helped drive me away.
Then discovered I carried heirs.
Then realized the machine he helped build was more dangerous than he expected.
“What did he do?” Adrian asked.
“He buried the claim.”
“From me?”
“From everyone.”
“Why not tell me privately?”
“You were still close to Kane.”
Adrian looked sick.
Robert Kane had been his adviser then.
Friend.
Almost an uncle.
Richard did not trust his own son’s inner circle.
Malcolm reached toward a drawer.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
“For Evelyn.”
My name.
Written by Richard Mercer.
I hesitated before opening it.
Evelyn,
If this reaches you, then my cowardice has probably outlived me.
I read silently.
Richard admitted approving the surveillance.
Admitted believing I weakened Adrian.
Then:
When I learned you were pregnant, I understood too late that I had mistaken control for protection.
I wanted to contact you.
I did not because Kane already suspected.
I arranged a private account in Boston under your maiden name.
My breath caught.
“What account?”
Malcolm nodded toward the letter.
I continued.
A trust.
Money.
Enough to help raise the children if something happened to me.
I never knew.
Why?
Because the account had never reached me.
Daniel called the bank.
The trust existed.
$3.2 million.
Untouched.
The notification letters had been redirected.
By Robert Kane.
Again.
But Richard’s final paragraph mattered more.
Kane believes money is the only inheritance worth controlling.
He is wrong.
There is a ledger documenting every illegal operation he built under Mercer protection.
If Adrian ever chooses his children over the empire, tell him to look where Patrick hid the first dollar he ever earned.
Adrian stared.
He knew immediately.
“Grandfather’s first truck.”
May you like
Patrick Mercer’s original 1952 delivery truck sat restored inside Mercer Consolidated’s corporate museum.
And hidden beneath its floorboard was a ledger capable of destroying Robert Kane.
