Chapter 12 - THE RAIL TERMINAL

I went.

Not alone.

But Kane didn’t know that.

Federal agents tracked from distance.

Adrian stayed out of sight because I asked him to.

That might have been the hardest order he had ever followed.

The old rail terminal smelled like rust and rain.

Kane stood beneath a broken light.

No gun visible.

No army.

Just a sixty-year-old man in an expensive coat.

“You look like your photographs,” he said.

I hated that.

“You watched my children grow up.”

“Yes.”

“Why not kill us?”

He smiled faintly.

“Because dead heirs create investigations. Living heirs create leverage.”

Cold.

Simple.

I understood him now.

“Why bring me here?”

“Because Adrian will destroy his empire for you.”

“He already handed over the ledger.”

Kane’s face changed.

Tiny.

Enough.

He hadn’t known.

Good.

“It’s over,” I said.

“No.”

“You’re predictable when control slips.”

His jaw tightened.

I continued.

“You convinced Richard that I was dangerous.”

“He didn’t need convincing.”

“You convinced Malcolm that Adrian would ruin the family.”

“Malcolm believed that already.”

“You convinced Vanessa that winning Adrian back mattered.”

Kane smiled.

“People are easiest to control when you only push what they already want.”

That line told me everything.

He hadn’t created our worst qualities.

He had monetized them.

“Why me?”

“Because Adrian loved you differently.”

I froze.

“Vanessa made him reckless. You made him question the structure.”

For years I had believed our marriage was a weakness in Adrian’s life.

Kane saw it as a threat because it made him want something outside the empire.

A different future.

Then Kane pulled a flash drive from his pocket.

“Everything linking me to the surveillance is here.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Trade.”

“For?”

“Your statement that Adrian threatened you during the divorce.”

I laughed.

“That’s your plan?”

“Federal investigators love frightened ex-wives.”

“I was frightened.”

His eyes brightened.

“But not of Adrian.”

His smile vanished.

Exactly.

A sound came from above.

Kane looked up.

Too late.

Agents entered from both sides.

He stepped backward.

Then reached inside his coat.

Adrian appeared from behind a concrete column.

“Kane.”

His voice stopped the room.

Kane froze.

Adrian did not draw a weapon.

He simply said:

“Don’t.”

For one second, I saw twenty years between them.

Mentor.

Boss.

Surrogate family.

Betrayal.

Kane slowly removed his hand.

Empty.

Agents arrested him.

No gunfire.

No dramatic execution.

Just handcuffs.

As they walked him away, Kane looked at Adrian.

“You think she’ll forgive you?”

Adrian said nothing.

Kane smiled at me.

“He still chose Vanessa.”

I looked at Adrian.

Then back at Kane.

“Yes.”

His smile faded.

“And that was Adrian’s mistake.”

I stepped closer.

“Not yours to use forever.”

Kane was taken away.

I thought that was the final secret.

It wasn’t.

The flash drive contained surveillance files.

Financial records.

And one audio recording.

Adrian’s voice.

Six years earlier.

The night before he gave me divorce papers.

He was speaking to Daniel.

“If Evelyn hates me, she’ll leave.”

Daniel answered:

“And if she doesn’t?”

Adrian’s voice broke.

“Then I’ll say whatever makes her.”

A pause.

Then Adrian whispered:

“Even if it means telling her I love Vanessa.”

May you like

I stared at the recording.

The truth had just changed again.
